Whoever gave you that information? If it came from an LFS I think you should return it for you were being misguided (to say the least).

2 of the local fish suppliers i use had these for sale as cory cats, and being fairly new, took there word for it, i will on monday try taking a picture in with me and see if they can recognise it, just to test, i am deeply disappointed with this result. He is a lovely natured fish, but i think i should have reaserched and they should know better as both local shops are run by enthusiast whom i used to before now take there word as gospel

this kinda thing really opens your eyes to the way some places work, my local pets at home seem to do better :)

thanks for this i now know where better advice comes from
oh the fluval has been replaced with an external tetra tek

I'm definitely agreeing with Marc, you should be able to take it back and get either a voucher or money back (I'd ask for the latter, accepting the former if they won't budge - you got sold something that isn't even close to what you wanted, and unless the staff that sold you the fish was "usually works in the bird section" [or on drugs], there should be no doubt that this fish is NOT a Corydoras, or even Callichtyidae [that's the bigger group that Corydoras fall into]). If you get a voucher, you can perhaps use it for something a little safer, like dry food or (previously researched so that you understand what you get) aquarium equipment (filter, heater or such).

Also, could you add to your profile where in the world you live [it's part of the forum rules, but it's also helpfull in the way that we know where you are from and can give more adequate information - such as local rules on sales in case of misinformation which vary from country to country, and sometimes even within a country].

You're a sport that you can still laugh about it.
Where's that place? I'd like to visit it; I'll be in Scotland soon.

It is rather larger than they are usually sold at - at least from the picture. When did you buy it? If it's recently I'd be writing to a fish magazine about the shop!

If the staff told you that it would grow to 6 inches max, then I would say that the staff also knew that it was NOT a Corydoras. Corydoras are all small, a little over 3 inches for the largest species.

I think we need to look at this thing from a different perspective: Thank God the guy that sold this fish as a Cory isn't a doctor; with a diagnosis like that, he could kill hundreds!

So often I see these lil' guys being misrepresented in the pet trade by clerks that have little more knowledge than how to keep them alive until they are sold. Alas, you have caught them red handed! Treat your new friend with care and tenderness and you will receive many years of heart warming "fishy love." (Can you tell I have a massive soft spot for this species?!)

he is lovely, if a bit skitish, but nice he does come to the glass when he is fed, and will swim near me when i am on the puter, :)
