Did you know fantastic help is an anagram of Planet Catfish? This forum is for those of you with pictures of your catfish who are looking for help identifying them. There are many here to help and a firm ID is the first step towards keeping your catfish in the best conditions.
after much discussion with Jools(thanks for your patience) and research by Jools( thanks again) we have decided these aren't L45's we contacted the LFS we got them from (paid a pretty price for them) and after several emails still have received no response as to why they think they're L45's. so maybe somebody can help us ID them thanks in advance.
First is the female she is about 3-1/2 to 4 inches nose to caudal peduncle, has a darker brown rim around the mouth that looks like a chocolate milk mustache but no bristles.
Next is the male. Notice the bristles are branched at the ends. He's 4-1/2 to 5 inches
close up of bristles.
I would agree that it's unlikely that those are L45, if nothing else because French Guyana isn't exactly along the top exporters of fish...
Do you by any chance have any more mature fry-pictures? Do the fry have distinct white edges on the caudal fin? If so, that would indicate that they are common
Can't seem to get the fry to pose for pics but there isn't any kind of white or cream colored edging on any of the fins.
They just seem more robust than my other Ancistrus sp(3). When they are just resting in the tank they are almost chocolate color but get the camera out and they lighten up and the pretty spots start showing. I really love the branched bristles and they are a beautiful pair just disappointed they aren't what they were sold as. At $25 each it was an expensive mis-ID.
Thanks
Carol
