Clove oil use as an anesthetic has been discontinued by many people after a few studies demonstrated that fish treated with clove oil still exhibit elevated cortisol levels. The clove oil incapacitates the fish but it still feels and experiences stress. In other words it's like all those horror stories of waking up during surgery and not being able to let anyone know. This is unfortunate because clove oil is easy to find and cheap. The methods that are generally approved and used by the research/academic community are with MS 222 (many names for this drug) or ice. MS 222 is not readily available, but ice is usually pretty easy to come across.
