Kath,
I had to search some books to find an answer to your question.
Fry must stay with the parents, as with Discus. None of the books state how long they eat of their parents, but I suggest you try feeding "dustfood" (very small flakes) after some time. You should find out whether they take it or not, and I assume that when they don't take it they still get food of their parents. I hope someone else joins in with more knowledge.
When I first saw your post, I wanted to refer to Grokefish, for I know he keeps them. That would have been quite useless.
Hope this may help a little.

Uaru are very nice cichlids. I had a few myself not so long ago.

Uaru babies will do well on any kind of food, as long as they can fit in their mouth. I usually start my babies out on a powder of some sort be it spirulina powder or krill powder or a fry bite type of food. When they get a little bigger you can feed them crushed flake. I've never had any luck trying to feed mine live food when small. Its a lot of extra work, without any extra rewards.
They do NOT have to kept with their parents.
