Megalechis Picta?

Hi there,

I brought 5 'hoplos' 18 months ago 1 turned out to be a normal 'thoracata' type and 4 are like the pictures below!

Is it M picta as the sight atlas.drpez.org suggests or another species ? All of the 4 have the very low dorsal...

I'm no expert, but that looks like picta to me. It also looks to me as if the dorsal fin has been cut off or otherwise damaged.

All four of the cats have always had that very low dorsal fin. I must admit that when I saw the first one, I too thought that it was damaged but all four? and 6 months later they have not changed

Those are damaged all right, ditto the upper part of the caudal fin.....

the fact that it's still being damaged is shown by the white regenerating tissue!
check on the tankmates; someone else in that tank is nibbling on your Hoplo's. :shock: :(
