Should I get an apex or pent roof?

I personally wouldn't have thought that it would make any difference, other than from a practical/estethical point of view. What is your concern about the difference?

I think Apex is a pitched roof with the ridge in the middle, while, Pent is a flat roof, but sloped to one side.

As Matt said, it really is asthetic, as one dos the same job as the other, though personally, i would go for a pitched roof, with the ridge in the middle !

Andrew, that's how I interpreted the choices too: Apex = normal ridged roof, Pent = sloping to one side.

There is of course the factor that a Pent-roof will have all the water come off one side, so if you're planning to place your fish-hut with one long side against a wall of a house, you definitely don't want an Apex roof that drops water on both sides - unless you put drains up to drain the water off anyways... And of course, if you go for the pent-roof along a wall, aim the water to the outside, not towards the wall ;-)

a Pent might be easyer to setup a rainwater collection system, otherwise I can't see a difference

I was thinking a pent roof would give me a taller side wall and thus more space for tanks. It's slightly more expensive though.

Yeah, I guess that's correct, you get a bit more space on one side - but check the height on the other side, and compare with the apex design - it may be that the total wall-size is actually about the same [I haven't checked].

Personally think the Apex roof is better, if you have the same hieght of tanks on each side, and the high bit is in the middle, it won't make the middle of the hut so cramped, plus along the ridge is an ideal place to put strip lights.

I have had both pitched and apex roofed fish houses and by far the best in my opinion is the apex, you have plenty of head room in the centre and it gives you room for overhead lights. a pitched roof on a standard shed is not high enough which would mean a special build and extra cost. Another advantage with an apex is that the heat that rises gathers in the top of the apex and if a circulating fan or fans are fitted high up in the apex this warm air can be re-circulated. Also The apex roof will allow you to have tanks almost up the the eaves and still allow easy access, with a pitched roof you will have to allow more height above the tanks for access. There are a couple of views of the inside of my fish house Here which show some of the advantages.
