Hi Can I ask why the L173 is cataloged in the same page as the L046? To me they are definately different in terms of body patterns and the tail patterns already set them appart.
Just curious ... or was the picture of the L173 inaccurate?

They're cataloged together as they are the same species, .

This is hugely oversimplified, but for different species, you'd need to see a fish with a wider head, bigger eyes, deeper body, that sort of thing.

Patterns of demonstrably variable fish are not enough to define species (although this is a slightly sticky one as the description does bang on about the colouration a lot) but are enough to define different l-numbers.

Sorry, but it matches the description of Hypancistrus zebra and I'm unaware of any other reason to split it. Perhaps some new information has emerged from Germany?

Sorry, I don't know any German, but I tried to have it translated into English using google. From what I am gathering, it's offsprings looks the same but differ when grown into adults? I think is all so says that it's a good 12 cm bigger than the L046.
Correct me if I am wrong...
