CATFISHES OF INDIA BY K.C.JAYARAM
A concise systematic account of the catfishes (Order Siluriformes) of the Indian region was published in 1976 under the Fauna of India series by the late Dr. K. S.Misra of the Zoological Survey of India. The area covered was India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Subsequent to this monograph no comprehensive account of the Indian region siluroids was available. In the intervening years many new taxa have been described and the very concept of catfish taxonomy itself has undergone many changes. Many foreign ichthyologists surveyed areas as Myanmar, NE India and have described many new taxa. Further the US National Science Foundation sponsored the All Catfish Species Inventory project which has helped in these new discoveries. India and the adjacent countries are rich in the fish faunal biodiversity and it is no wonder many such new fishes are described from here.
This book is the cumulative work of the author who has been studying the catfishes for well over 50 years. Though titled Catfishes of India, it covers the entire Indian region as specified above. All recent findings and theories have been incorporated and full description of 197 species under 52 genera, 13 families have been given.
Two new subfamilies have been provided. Drawn mostly on the model of Dayâ??s Fish India, but with more elaborate synonymy, and better description with uniform citation of data.
182 species have been illustrated and 11 colour plates portray some species.
