Unknown cat needs ID'in (please & thanky)

Someone on another site was asking for an ID of this cat.
They think it might be a Synodontis punctulatus but they aren't sure.
The pic they posted in the thread was too dark to make out most of the details, so I cranked up the gamma correction to lighten it enough to see.

the markings sure change a lot, and not a splash of yellow on it anywhere.

good thing it's not a hybrid though.

is it me, or are the rounded taillobes also fairly characteristic of Schoutedeni? they always have those, and almost any Syno I know has far more pointed taillobes......
