I have just added this delightful Geophagus to my collection. Can any of you experts ID him for me. Seems very docile, yet confident.

Your fish is a Satanoperca, I am not sure what species.

Looks like a Satanoperca to me as well, but I also don't know what species it is. However, you might want to check with the people over at http://www.cichlid-forum.com

yup, it's an Satanoperca, but those species are hard to identify. Some species even look 100% alike, but the only thing different is the breeding process. I think it's some kind of leucosticta or jurupari, but don't shoot me if I'm wrong ;)

Looks more like a Juripari than a Leucosticta. I would expect more facial speckles if it was a Leucosticta

I have had a shufty and I think it most closely matches Satanoperca 'Redlips'. He is now showing a single black spot on his upper tailfin. Thanks for the help. He seems very passive yet will come up to the glass and watch you rather than run and hide !!

jurapari for sure imo

To me it sure looks like S.jurupari... And if you could, I would recommend you to get a few more... These are peaceful cichlids that will do much better in a small group of, say 5 - 7 individuals.

I have a group of 6 W.C. Satanopercas in my 600lit. S.A. tank, together with Uarus, Characins and catfish (ofcourse) and they very rarely show any signs of aggression.

I would love to add more but I think the tank will not take more than another one or two at a push. The bio load from this fish seems quite small in respect of waste. He seems happy apart from haveing the odd challenge with my Syno. Angelicus

Nice fish! I just wanted to add that you might want to take a look at the book, "South American Eartheaters" by Thomas Weidner, if you haven't already. Its got great info on S jurupari, and is one of my favs.

looks a fair amount like my jurapari but my jurapri is a little more I guess you could say "sparkly"

If they are sparkly, the may be Satanoperca leucosticta - particularly if they are spotted in the face. http://www.eartheaters.com and http://www.cichlidae.info are good places to discuss these fish...

Yes, I agree the fish in the pictures in the original post are S. jurupari. But awdawg said that he had a sparkly version of the above fish - so a similar shaped fish with bright/sparkly spots would be S. leucosticta (but not NECESSARILY!).

Here's a pic of what I believe to be S.leucosticta, it is a good 5" now. Sadly he/she is alone as they are generally unavailable in my part of the world and I found this single specimen in a tank of Africans.

It gets on well with the Brochis cats and they don't seem to mind it joining in the dig for worms burried in the gravel. With any luck I'll be able to find some friends for it one day.

Looks similar to mine that does...
