New tank !

After saying to myself "I'll get a bigger tank when he needs it", thinking it would be a year or two before it ever happened, I actually did something early for a change and bought a big tank this week :o . It's all very exciting :D .

The tank I bought, off of ebay, is 400 litres (100 gallons)so this will be more than big enough to house my Vampire pleco (currently 6 inches and in a 70 litre - just under 20 gallon tank) when he reaches adulthood. With all that extra floor space (5 foot by 2 foot) I'm now tempted to introduce new bottom feeders, and as always plecos are my favourites. I know plecos are territorial so would there be a problem having another medium sized (less than a foot) pleco in there? Or a few smaller ones (less than 8 inches)?

So can anyone advise me on if this would be ok and what pleco(s) would be appropriate (not too big, not too aressive, not too ugly  and not super sensitive). Also how do Vampires normally get on with clown loaches and red tailed sharks?

Note: this tank will be fully set up and cycled before I go out and add any fish to it

one big pleco always looks better, i have a 7" Sailfin and its a focal point when he comes out, if i had a few then i would just look at it like normal, i would get a nice pack of skunk corys, about 15 or so they would look fantastic!!!

Intravenous: Congratulations on the new tank.

I would not put a (sailfin pleco) in a 400L tank, as it would outgrow the tank eventually.

There are LOTS of choices, but it's a very personal opinion what you and you obviously need to make sure you have sufficient hiding spaces. I like Peckoltia species, like or .

Smaller panaque species are also nice, would be a good one.

Then there's all the Hypancistrus species that all stay reasonably small (max 6-7" total length). I'd say would be my favourite.

Baryancistrus species will not grow very quickly, and may also work out for you. I've got a . But eventually, it may need a bigger tank...

There are of course others too, these are just some examples. If you click on a Cat-eLog link, you can click on the Genus at the top left corner of the Cat-eLog title, and get a list of all species of that genera.
