Black Spotted Ancistrus... But what one??

Hi all - just seen the L182 entry has been updated... meaning my ID of these as L182's has been blown out of the water...

They are about 5" and They are breeding so they have got to be pretty mature.

Anyone got any ideas. (as they are breeding I want to be able to tell people what they are when I'm selling them :))

They are really dark now I've got them on a darker substrate - they look mottled in the last 3 pictures due to the light sand bottom.

Hi folks...

I had a look at the latest offering from Aqualog today and these look like the new pictures that they have added for L183's :)

happy I've got L183 - but dissapointed that they dont have teh promanante bands on their fins...

Her are a couple more of the male - the females have been hiding since i mentioned getting pictures :)

When L183 A dolichopterus gets older and reach a size around 10 cm they loose a big part of the white seams in their fins but they also loose the brightness of the white spots, I dont agree that your fishes are L183...I have no better idea then Yann.

not just me that often doubts it then :)...

Have you got any pictures? I been told when that the bands fade as the mature... Wasnt sure about the extent of the fadeing eg just to the white tips that these have....

I was cleaning up tonight and snapped a few pics of my mature trio of L183s. Not Cat-eLog quality, but in the first and third you can see the fin edges. Most of the white coloring is gone.

I hope you dont think that your species is L183 because it's not, the fry of L183 shows clearly white seams directly after the yolksac are consumed.
I still agree with Yann that you have one of that species he propose.

Fair enough - I think I'm trying to convince myself :D

Hi guys.
Here is a link to an article i wrote about breeding Ancistrus Dolichopterus in Aquazone (biggest aquatic portal in Greece).Unfortunately it's in Greek Language but if you like, i can translate it.
I believe that you will fing the pics very helpfull and i have also to mention that my 10cm+ breeders are starting to loose their prominent white bands but the fry produced have very clear and thick white bands on them and this you can see it on the pics on the link.

http://www.aquazone.gr/forums/index.php?showtopic=3630

I hope you like....even it's greek

I just found that you have to be registered in order to see the article so here is a pic of 2 month-old juveniles...

Hello everybody,

I wanna add another Number to the Lottery..
My best guess is L181. Based on the following:

I exclude L182, because this species has a very flat profile that I cannot see in the pictures. Additionally, L182 shows more like red or orange spots than truly white spots in the fins and is not black, but brownish.

I doubt these are L183, but to be shure you should count the number of soft rays in the dorsal fin. The reason for that is, that A. Dolichopterus is the only Ancistrus species known that has 8-10 soft rays (mostly 9), while all others have 7-8 (mostly 7) soft rays. Well, if you count 8, you´re lost, of course..
Colour is not a good Identification tool, as some others pointed out, since some of the A. Dolichopterus keep their white bands, while others lose the white seams completely.

So, the only other black/white spotted Ancistrus-species I am aware of is L181, which is also known by two other L-Numbers which I don´t recall at the moment..

On to the next round, your turn,

greetings, Sandor

Maybe LDA33?

Hi,
Maybe LDA33?
Probably not, since LDA33 is a Baryancistrus sp. but this is definitely an Ancistrus. ;)
