What type of common is this?

He is fuzzy and has a lyred tail.

To me, it looks like a Hypostomus species. Which one is much harder to say... But even the Genus is a little bit hard to determine, it could be another genus. A side-view with the dorsal fin erect would help.

Looks like Hypostomus plecostomus from the llanos, but I would need another photo or two to confirm that 100%.

Heres a side pic, he seems to show that dark striped pattern more often then not.

Striped pattern is typical "night/stress" colouration. It helps the fish "disappear" when it needs to hide.
I'm with Shane on this one
- I don't have Shane's knowledge of the local variations, so I can't say where it came from...
