I've got a beautiful bristlenose and I'd like to know which one ive got.
It has a reflective gold color to it (like each scale has a gold patch on it), and a small white spot on the top and botom of its tail fin (at the very back). He has long branching bristles.
He is not at all like the bristlenose I usually see at pet stores, which are darker brown and dont have the metalic/reflective quality that mine has.

Sorry for not having a photo, but he hides under a bunch of plants in the back of the aquarium all day. Im hoping the white spots on the tail fin will give it away w/out a photo.

Unfortunately, quite a lot of bristlenoses have the white tail spots you describe.

Unfortunately, from the photos I can not even take a good guess. Any chance of some more shots? Place the fish in a photo tank if possible.

I'm leaning towards your first guess, Silurus.
He's got bristles around his gills, too, if that helps any.

I'll try to get some better photos. He is in an aquarium with huge south american cichlids, so he hides most of the time (although Ive never seen him get picked on)

The reason I am asking is because I'd like to get him a mate. The 2nd step will be finding a place to get one. Are there knowledgeable online resellers, or a good vendor I could have a local pet store place an order from?

Next time you do a water change, simply catch the Pleco and put him in the bucket with the old water in it. from this point you can take pictures, just make sure to put him back before you dump out the water

(The forum automatically puts *'s in cichlid for fun, after all it IS a catfish forum! It also puts a * in place of the e in pleco, but that's another story.)
