could it be a young L178a?

It's a small Panaque species but hard to tell which species with that picture, L002 is one of the candidate's.
Take a look in the Cat-eLog for comparison.

If it is from Peru, that would rule out L002, as if my memory serves me correctly, L002 is from the tocatins in eastern Brasil.

L206, L329 and L341 are all from Peru, and fit the bill.

L206 looks the best visual match to me, although the reference photo shows a more spotted rather than striped tail.

Hi!

Being from Peru, L206 or 226 Panaque changae is a rather good candidate!!

Still difficult to say exactly as since the picture was taken while the fish was out of the water, it isn't tooo easy to determine the head pattern!!

Cheers

What name they are sold under dont matter...it doesn't say anything about the origin if you dont know for sure they are imported from that particular country. There are lot's of species with country name out there but mostly is what the wholesaler or lfs have giving them that looks fancy.

he also told me that a "peru zebra" was a different pleco so does anyone have photos of one as he said that he has gone through this website and he can't even find one similar.

If it is for sure from Peru it's not L002, so I agree with Yann...try to take a pic when the fish are in the tank.

Could it be Ancistrini sp. L127?

I wouldn't think it's an Ancistrini specie. Eyes size in relation to body indicates that it's a Panaque specie - they have fairly small eyes.

So I would think that is the right specie.
