This is a new pleco in Taiwan, I never saw it before.

Any idea on where it comes from (I'm looking at least for a river system)?

Hi,

i think this is Hypostomus luteus (like said in one of the links), a species from the Rio Uruguay in southern Brasil. There is a detailed article about the Hypostomus species of this system by Roberto Reis in the first DATZ Sonderheft Harnischwelse from 1992. H. luteus was described by Godoy in 1980. Reis describes in his article the change of colouration one can nicely see in the pictures of the link. Small H. luteus with total length less than 80mm are totally dark with white dots. The bigger they become, first the unpaired fins start getting yellow, then the body from posterior to anterior. Large fish are either yellow except for the head or even totally yellow.

There are some very beautiful Hypostomus species in southern Brasil (H. roseopunctatus, regani, margaritifer, luteus, ternetzi...), unfortunatly they are not very suitable for aquarium care because of their size and the lower temparatures they need.

Thr Chinese caption on the Basil Aquarium pix just gives the Chinese common name of the fish, "Nihong damo II xing", which translates as "Neon Indian monk type II".

At these prices, I could buy a whole Indian temple.

Oh, It doesn't really mean neon Indian Monk.... The first 2 chracters kind of means neon, but it is neon red, or bright red. The last two is a common name for pleco.


I am a member of the forum with the yellow coloration pleco... and TKP is the forum master there, it is a great forum.

Plecoman,

"Nihong" is a transliteration of "neon". Though "hong", "red" is the second character, it is used for the sound, not the meaning. "Damo" has been used for two thousand years to mean "Buddhist sage from India". Sure, it also is used nowadays to mean "pleco".

According to the importer's from Taiwan, I believed this fish is output comes from Brazil, its name is "Hypostomus sp".Based on the importer's picture, this fish have three different size .

The name of the smallest size is "H.Luteus I ", its body, pectoral fins, pelvic fins and the dorsal fin is the black performance,it has the bright yellow besides caudal fin and the dorsal fin part, other approximately are the black, also on the body has many spot existence.

The name of the medium size is "H.Luteus II ", its bodily near caudal fin gradually transforms the bright yellow from the black colour, The black colour of each fin also vanished and change to yellow, the spot on his body also disappear.

The name of the large size is "H.Luteus III "(the followed photo), was obvious can see vrey little black colour on his body and head, other have all become
the bright yellow, extremely beautiful and attractive.

When I saw this at the first time , his bright color make me too surprised, he very quick adapts Taiwan's water quality ,very health and and start to ate food at the second day.

Maybe this fish is the highest sale price in Taiwan , but it is already sold and wait for his new master.

There have been some fish from the Rio Uruguay imported into the UK recently, including some nice Crenicichla
I know that we were talking premium prices for these.
Anyone in the UK got a H. luteus, or know of someone with one?

Hi all,
We recently imported a H.luteus from Brazil it's body colour was darker than the fish pictured, more like a margiretifer but with these stunning orange fins. The fish photographed may be just stressed and will probably darken up. Sorry no pics, it "dissapeared" before I got chance to photograph it.
