I am leaning towards a young S. obesus, but I'm still not convinced myself.

If it helps, it is about 15 cm long...

At that size, I think it is unlikely to be S. obesus.

Are there many species with such an enlarged adipose and big eyes?

There are quite a number (the schall-clarias-sorex group for one), but they usually do not have spotted bodies at this size.

This fish reminds of some specimens from the Mono R. basin (Togo) I studied.
I could not name them after one of the known species in that region (which is poorly documented btw). My specimens had more mandibular teeth than is seen in S. obesus and a longer snout than is seen in S. nigrita.
Maybe an undescribed species?
