I was looking for M. Iheringi but I'm not sure that's what I got. What do you guys/girls think?

To tell you the truth, that's what I was thinking too. I really hope that's not the case though. Is there any way to distinguish the two species at this small size?

There is no easy way to tell the two genera apart externally. However, I noted that your fish is somewhat more elongate than is usually seen in Microglanis (which is the case with Pseudopimelodus).

I dont think it is M.Iheringi as the head patern isn't dark enough. I dont think it is a bufonis either as the tail isn't forked enough. I've got loads of microglanis and they all get labeled up as bumblebee catfish or M.Iheringi when they could be any of several different types of microglanis. I found a website once which really went into detail on how to distinguish between the types, i didnt bookmark it as it was in german so can't remember where it was. Any how I think it is a pseudopimelodus rather than a microglanis, maybe P.albomarginatus. If it turns out to be a bufonis ill swap you for M.Iheringi anyday, I've been looking for one for ever.

Did you happen to pick those up at Petco? I noticed the stores down here in Peoria and Bloomington were selling Bumblebee cats and, they looked to me to be Psedopimelodus but they were small enough and hiding behind rocks, so I really wasn't sure. I asked one of the clerks about them and they couldn't give me the Latin classification but did say they'd get to be 8 to 10 inches.

I got mine at Petland here in Rockford. These fish which I'm still assuming are Psuedopimelodus bufonis seem to be available all over right now as "bumblebee catfish". Within the last few weeks I've checked the local Petco, Petsmart, Aqualand, and Petland. I also trekked to Milwaukee and checked at Hoffer's. Neither Petland or Hoffer's have had iheringi for quite some time but they both have the bufonis. I wonder what the factor is for availability. Are they generally wild caught? Is it a breeding season thing? Anybody know?

These things are wild caught. Young Pseudopimelodus and Microglanis probably share the same habitat, and the collectors would probably not bother to distinguish between the two.
