I'm considering subscribing to a magazine relatet to our hobby. My father subscribes to DATZ, so I'll go for something else. Could you give me some suggestions? Preferably mags written in English, but any suggestions would be appreciated!

Tropical Fish Hobbyist would be a good choice.

Is Practical Fishkeeping any lighter on the ads than TFH? I've always liked TFH, but w/o the ads it might be less and 1/4 it's current thickness..heh
Also, is it available here in the US at all?

I don't know about a subscription, but it is available in the chain bookstores (Borders, Barnes & Noble) here.

I would also go for Practical Fishkeeping - but my opinion is somewhat biased, since I'm the technical editor...
We do try and cater for all areas of the hobby, so you won't get as much catfish content as you'll see in, say the Catfish Study Group magazine, but there's usually something in every month on catfishes.
The news pages also have updates on what's happening in the catfish world (usually with the latest details on what Silurus has described!).
Jools is on the panel of experts, and wrote an excellent feature on Chaetostoma for the current issue.
You can subscribe from anywhere in the world at the website:

What is F.A.M.A. Magazine like these days? I've not read a copy for many years but when I was younger it was a great source of information.
Datz I've also heard very good things about but not seen a copy (not that I can read German...).

FAMA -used- to be great...I have several old issues.
Currently? Compare it to Aquarium Fish Monthly. That bad. For over a year now, they have run this stupid stupid article/story about a haunted aquarium; the ads are all over the place, the columns bland (I even read one recently where the author stated in the first line that he had never kept the fish he was about to write on before, hence the article was a mix of info he had heard and read). For the same money, get TFH. Or find old FAMAs on Aquabid.
By the way, what goes 43 pounds convert over into US funds? I might be aiming for Practical Fishkeeping...

About $77 or so according to
http://www.xe.com/ucc
Does that include shipping to the US?

Apologies once again for the shameless promotion!
Yes, the 42GBP price includes shipping. If I am brutally honest, I don't think it's particularly cheap alongside the US titles, as the freight rates for sending the magazines from the UK to the USA are rather steep. However, there are 13 issues a year, rather than the usual 12 (the extra one comes out at Christmas) and it is really good!

Actually, $77 is about right for subscription of a UK-based magazine to the US. I pay about the same rate for another UK-based (non fish-related) magazine.
You still save compared to buying individual copies at the bookstore.

DATZ is nice and there is a lot of competence, but sometimes there are to much about terrariums, frogs, amphibians so i finish my subscription.
There is a new german magazine available, number one is just out:
Amazonas-Magazine
chief editor is H.-G. Elvers (and Stories from Ingo Seidel, Olaf Deters, Volker Bohnnet, Ole Klawonn and many more). They don't write just about amazonian topics.
The number one looks really great, wonderful pics and interesting stories. Not so important but even nice, it is cheap.
