Is there anyway to differentiate the sexes, aside from putting a bunch of them in a tank and seeing what happens?

I just wish that I could find some more, the LFS that I got it from is closing and they are not ordering anymore fish, plus it was labeled as a clown to boot. Also Datz has them listed under the Genus Ancistomus.

Gemsonthebottom:
The cat-elog tries to explain the story about Ancistomus etc.
The taxonomic placement of this species (indeed the group of species of which it is a member) is currently in something of a flux. While Ancistomus was recently erected to house these elongate species that demonstrate entirely different secondary sexual dimorphism and breeding behaviour from 'classic' Peckoltia, the problem exists in defining what 'classic' Peckoltia really means and indeed what it's relationship is with the other generic trash can that is Hemiancistrus. Until all this is resolved, these fish are conservatively placed in Peckoltia here although there is a strong, if poorly definsible, compulsion to put them in Hemiancistrus.

Bronzefry:
I guess the article about breeding them would explain how to sex them.

These are usually contaminants that come in with other imports. I found one in a LFS. It had come in with an import shipment of Panaque Maccus. It seems a lot more people are posting photos of them recently.

More people posting them is probably the "new car effect". If you have just bought a new car [or decided to buy, or whatever] you'll suddenly see many more of them than you have ever done before. Same if you have a particular fish, you'll see more pictures of them once you've got one. Just because you notice them more... ;-)

And I think you're right, they are contaminants with Panaque Maccus.

There are 4-5 spp. that can be found as bycatch in P. maccus shipments out of Colombia. It is just that people are starting to look closely rather than say, "Just clown plecos" and walk away. Give every wild shipment a good once over. It is worth your time.

Especially when they're being sold for less than $7 American. :D Once they settle in, the orange coloration is quite something.

It was less than $5.00 for it!

I got this one as a grown-up. These are the settled-down colors:

This is some kind of territorial species. Maybe I say that because I haven't seen one before.
