Can you tell the difference between male and female by the whether they have hairs on the pectoral fins? or doesn't that work?

You could, but it's not very accurate, IMO, as I have seen males with rather short odontodal growths, possibly capable of being passed off as a female.

so it is possibe then? just not accuratly enough? what is the best way of sexing them?

There is a whole faq on zebras (two, in fact) on this site. As for me, I have found pectoral fin *shape* to be most effective.

Why not post them on the site to see. There are far more qualified L-46 owners than I here. Better yet, head over to zebrapleco.com, for they have an entire message board dedicated to zebra sexing.
