ive just had a quick re-browse of the big cats sticky, and i was wondering, who did build that 20,000 gallon tank? he must be one devoted catfish-man!

Actually the person mentioned in the Sticky build three large tanks. 20000 gallons was the middle sized tank. The person in question doesn't want the publicity and as such I won't post his name. I haven't seen the tanks in person, however several very close and trusted friends of mine have.

The point in the STICKY is that it takes an extraordinary amount of resources (and an extraordinary aquarist) to ensure the PROPER care for these fishes throughout their lives. Fishes that are WIDELY available at VERY low prices and are often sold to novice aquarists.

Aquarist perhaps with the best of intentions that unfortunatly really have no concept of what they are getting themselves into.

i know exactly what you mean. I went down to my lfs the other day and guess what i saw? the famous tank buster, the RTC
5 inches long in a tank 7 inches
he couldnt move, he just hovered with his big gawping face that would be difficult to resist!!
Really, before you buy from an lfs, make sure you trust them and listen to advice they give you

Any idea what fishes he keeps in the tank?

He had several large Red-tailed cats all over 48" long, and
"The largest Pseudodoras niger I have ever seen"
Quoting a friend of mine who also happens to be a zoo-keeper and has hence seen more than one of these! (Actually this is quoting more than one person!) The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has one roughly 40" long TL, it is supposively small by comparison.

I understand he also kept a sizable school of Pacu all of them in excess of 40 lbs. There were several other large catfish that at least one person that saw the tanks didn't recognize to a species.

BTW: This is not meant to be a dig at those asking questions about these tanks, but rather an observation: The total number of P/Ms and questions I've recieved based on my comments above makes me TOTALLY understand why this particular aquarist would want to remain anonymous.

After-all, this is this particular individuals DREAM HOUSE! The last thing you'd (I'd) want with your (my) dream house is for it to become a tourist attraction!
