I'm setting up a 250 tank for a single Brachyplatystoma Juruense. Should I leave him alone? If not, what ohter types of South American cichlids etc would make suitable tankmates? Thanks in advance for your input ...

I'm setting up a 250 tank
Is that Litres, UK gallons or US gallons, and what are the dimensions of this tank

Sorry about that. It's 250 gallons 7 ft long 36 wide ... I have a chance to score a blue eyed pleco ... Would he/she be a suitable tankmate?

That would be a nice mix.

however, Blue Eyed Pleco's are nearly extinct in the wild......maybe we should leave those strictly for the dedicated hobbyist that buys more than one with the aim of breeding them.

if we continue to buy this particular fish as a single add-on to the bigger tank, pretty soon we will know it only from pics and fish in formaline :(

There are less endangered nice Plecs that will do fine with the big Pims. P nigrolineatus for example.

Maybe you'd better skip the Pims, take a loan, buy 4 Blue Eyes and breed them? much more rewarding, and if you succeed, you'll be some sort of a hero in here

That would be something else .. I know a guy who knows a guy who used to breed them in an outdoor pond in Fla. Too bad he stopped doing it some years ago ... He could have made a few bucks ...

Most large plecs would be fine with a Jurense.
however, Having stingray's as tank mates as recommended by Kev is an excellent alternative

Thanks for the ideas ... So many choices so little tank space ... I've decided to go with the B. Juruense and an L25. With the possible addition of a silver arrowana.

I've got 8 discus, 2 "big" clown loach and an albino gibbiceps in with mine. All residents are very happy. It occasionally gives the gibbi a nip but just to let him know who's daddy.
