When you say off color do you mean the lighter brown? The picture came out a little light. I was using ambient light without a flash. Are these really common? I have 5 of them and they sell at the LFS (in Japan through) for really cheap when small.

Yes. They usually have a more contrasting color pattern.

and large they get, Gibby's.
at least 1 foot, sometimes even more. They also last quite a while; 25 year old specimen are still turning up here and there.
A nice fish, a very good algae-eater too and more colorful than the Common Plec (P pardalis).
unfortunately Gibby's tend to be very nocturnal, some are less shy, but many don't show themselves at all, and could give any Dorad or Auchenipterid a run for the money.

Hypostomus have less dorsal rays (7-8); Pterygoplichthys 13-14.

I know they get big. I have them in seperate tanks. One of them is about 7in long now. He was in a 45gal tank and I moved hime to a 70gal tank. Now that he's in the bigger tank all he does is hide. He was a lot more active in the 45gal.
