Found this from aquarium glaser.

Some weeks ago we received a few pieces of Corydoras baianinha. This extreme rare Corydoras only occurs in a little number of small streams in the south of Brasil. The population of Cordoras baianinha is very much in danger, because its living space was already largely distroyed by environmental pollution and forest clearing! It would be highly appreciated if some aquarium hobbyists would try to breed this endangered species. This kind was not furtherly studied scientifically. It is known, however, that the animals occur in cool black water with low total hardness. We hope that the continued existence of this species can be ensured in this case.

I'm not aware that <i>Corydoras baianinha</i> is a name that has been validly published (and is thus available). Perhaps this is a trade name?

Looks very similar to Cory. Barbatus, lovely fish... I'd be game definately (fat chance though)!

I have seen this Cory on lists from Rio De Janeiro exporters, usually indicates they are fairly local to Rio or Sau Paulo.
I will see if I can find the list as it had collection location on it.

BAIANINHO is a trade name, I believe it is the name of the area from where Corydoras 'BAIANINHO' I is found. It was eventually namd by Hieronimus in1995 as C. lacerdai in hounor of Marco Lacerda the collector.


Now more confusion! Another similar species was found in the same area and was given the name C. 'BAIANINHO' II This psecies has yet to be scientifically described.


It now looks like we have another very similar species, although I beleive this one to be the largest of the three,similar in size to C. barbatus. The males have exceptionally long pectoral fins just like C. macropterus. I have pictures but as yet not the permision to publish them. As soon as I get the OK they will be uploaded to my page. I am hoping the obtaine some of these but I fear the price will be very high.

I suppose this one should be called C. 'BAIANINHO' III

Making a closer inspectionof the pictures I now believe the aquarium glaser fish to be C. lacerdai.

like Ian already noticed, Corydoras sp. "baianinho" (or similar terms) is a trade name for C. lacerdai.

Som news about this fish.
According to Marco Lacerda this fish is not Cory lacerdai, but a closely related species. It comes from near the middle coast of Bahia. The local collector says it is from black water, inside forest (same type of biotope as Cory lacerdai, and Cory baianinho II), and very rare (only ten to twenty fish collected each time).This fish, Cory lacerdai, Cory barbatus, Cory kronei and Cory baianinho II all belong to the old genus (that mightl be ressurected by brazilian ichthyologist soon) Scleromystax.

One can only image the price of those fishes!! Few years back Aquarium Glaser imported longnose variation of C. reynoldsi and wholesalers price was 2000â?¬/piece

I am hoping to get some baianinho II on tuesday. They are "large" we will see.

i think you will find its c113

The original picture posted I can now verify as an undescribed Scleromystax species with the number C113 and is a female.
