Hey there Guys, I have a cory that has buldging eyes (popeye maybe) but I want to know if the fact that I added salt to the tank for the discus is the cause of this ?? any help would be much appreciated. I added A tablespoon for every 10 gallons.

1. Water parameters
a) Temerature range. 28°c
b) pH. 6.5°
c) GH. 11°
d) KH -
e)Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, leavels. 0
f) Water change frequency = Once a week 20%
(Most LFS's will check your water and give a list of readings).

2. Tank set up
a) Size. 32 gallons
b) Substrate. Bare Bottom + potted plants
c) Filtration. Sponge filter + internal filter
d) Furnishings. - drift wood
e) Other tank mates.- Discus and Angels
f) How long has it been set-up? atleast 6 months.

Not sure if it's because of the salt, but certainly, the salt isn't going to help. Almost all catfish DO NOT like salt, they are purely freshwater creatures.

I'm unsure about where this idea of adding salt to the water comes from, but it's certainly not generally good for fish that are from the Amazon or most other tropical areas. The water in those rivers are usually very soft, and definitely does not contain much salt.

A tablespoon of salt is about 10-15g per ~40 liter, so about 0.25% salt, which is quite brackish. Sure, it's not proper marine levels at all, but it's certainly noticably salty.

A fine sand as buttom substrate would make him feel better, it's much closer to his natural envirenment...also for the others....

Firstly it is a bit of a myth about salt and Corys, I don't know where the idea came from in the first place, it's true that some species of "Catfish" are totally intolerant of salt but Corys ain't one of them. The use of a little rock salt as a treatment is often the best method, I have used it many times. I would not have thought the salt would have caused the bulging eyes, What species of Cory is it, there is a possibility that it is a species not suited to warmer temperatures.
