It depends on the tank size. If your tank is big enough, fossil catfish (Heteropneustes fossilis)could live together in a group, males and females. During the spawning time they form a hierarchic structure, males are following dominant female to fertilise her eggs. Sometimes they are fighting, but with no hurt. You must cover well the tank, because during fighting they sometimes could jump out.

Your tank size is OK :-) IMHO H. microps is the same species as H. fossilis. I agree with those, who are saying that H. microps is nothing more than the result of anomalous fin regeneration or a mutation in H. fossilis. I believe that your fishes won't hurt each other. You can see a fight of 2 young specimen on video on Cat-eLog, and the fishes are still alive and happy :-)

To follow Iwona comments. The Catfish of the Month article mentions H. microps as a junior synonym.

and in a 400+ l tank you can keep a group with no problems.

they're indeed quite sociable, although 2 might just be the wrong number!
any chance of picking up a few more?

I've kept a pair of fossilis for many years, perhaps a male and female as one is pale and the other much darker in color. They are in a 135 Gal tank with other catfish species and spend most of the time together as close companions, as said, like playful children....
