Who is this huge spotted Parancistrus?

This huge Parancistrus has been in my home for 4 months, but still not quite sure its L-Number. As per the information from the aquarium shop where I acquired it, it is L258; as per the information from advance hobbyists, it is L31, but as per my experience, it is neither L258 nor L31. Any advices?

Hi!

Really no idea... under what name did you buy it...

Surely it is a huge superbe male...

Could be L 31...the coloration and pattern match, young individual are usually darker but they shall get much more like yours once full grown...

Regarding L258 since I don't have any pic of it close to me... I 'll tell u later about!

Cheers

I bought it under L258, but ... seems that it is not. Before I bought it, I had already had a L258. Here is a photo of him: http://tinypic.com/view.html?pic=231glf
They are totally different in body colour and spot colour. I also have small and middle sized L31. Here is a photo of one of my small sized L31 http://tinypic.com/view.html?pic=231g6e . Know that when L31 grow up to middle or large size, its spots should be very small and not sharp, but this one has sharp and a bit large spots! So keep thinking of its L-Number! Any advices!

Hi!

Well after seeing the original pic in the DATZ, if you could have a picture of the tail that would greatly help...

So far I find that all of your fish are looking like L31...

For your more information, here is another photo of the L258 which I posted its photo in my last reply: http://tinypic.com/view.html?pic=231qwp . It's body colour is more dark and solid. In addition, it's spots are a bit irregular in shape!

Hi!!

Wouldn't L31 and L176 be the same species taking at different age stage... especially since coming from the same river... there isn't so much differences between thses 2

Remember about the quite common big color and pattern variation amon Loricariidae ...

Cheers

Hi Kev, it is too amazing. You were in Rio Xingu catching the amazing plecos! When did you take these photos? How about the situations of Rio Xingu? Very wild and natural? any pollutions? Were there many people for plecos? Did you find any big sized L31 or L176 or L258 or similar?

the Xingu was great, the only polution i seen was there was quite a bit of litter and rubbish around the populated area's. Seen quite a few Parancistrus in exporter's but only small one's in the river :D . Jool's has a bunch of photo's of the fish and the river, so look out for his article :D .
