It's a Heteropneustes fossilis.

Also called a Liver Catfish.

A real beauty and fairly easy to keep as well. very toigh when it comes to waterparameters and tankmates, eats about anything that fits the mouth; lively fish as well.

the one thing you do NOT want is to get stung, as these are quite toxic!
so be careful when handling them....

The sting is from the pectoral fin spines.

Reports are that it causes excruciating pain, enough to possibly put a person into shock (which can be hazardous). Certain individuals may be more susceptable to the venom which may pose more of a danger.

I have heard rumors of deaths due to invenomation from this fish, but I have never read any first hand reports.

Silurus? (HH), any validity to these rumors?

I also know someone at a local importers that stated he was mildly stung. He reported a burning sensation, minor inflammation and tenderness at the site.
But I am not sure if this is typical and I didn't witness it first hand.

We kept them for many years and never had a problem. They moved away whenever a hand approached it in the tank. What you don't want to do is grab it with bare hands, eg, to extricate it from a net or pick it up off the floor. As for being stung, the only reliable reports we've heard are of a painful stabbing sensation followed by local inflammation. Worth being careful, though.

None whatsoever (unless one develops some kind of severe immune reaction, which is extremely rare).
