Hello Catfishers

Post by CoolTcat »

I'm from rural Australia and keep fish without the benefit of mains power - sort of low input fishkeeping. Sounds messy doesn't it, but is mostly successful and just as brilliant to look at and happy fish. I have coolwater tough fish able to tolerate temp fluctuations and run filters and lights at night on battery stored solar power. I suspect many plants to be the secret to success, also quantities of shrimp.
My cats are Corydoras (6sp) and Hoplos and I have kept Tandanus in the past. Would love more mid-sized cool water cats as I am getting a new (and larger) tank soon, which will be no 6, 5 fresh and a brackish.
Any other solar fishkeepers out there?

I live in the Pacific NW near Puget Sound...

I brought home three glass catfish because they were so different and cool looking. I also have clown loaches, tiger barbs, whiteskirt tetras and an *angel*, an African Dwarf Frog, and, a Betta. I never thought of my two otos as *catfish*, but of course they are?

This site has a wonderful reputation and was the first place I came to when I had a catfish question... it's too cool here! :D

Do you know that there are catfish in Croatia??? Aperantly imported from Canada to breed in ponds, somehow they got in local lakes and know we have them allmost everyware...they have adopted themselfs and they can survive throu the winter with no problem... we call them "cvergl"!!
I am trying to get more data about fish, so if anybody interested...

Well there are no catfish native to New Zealand none nada zilch. So according to your theory we should have the most catfish fanatics down here.

Still only 3 million of us spread over 2 islands.

Only catfish I know of are in the North Island, foreigners introduced at some stage or other, think they are bullhead cats, dark brown about 8 to 10" long and either very very fine scales or skin like an eel. The are horrible to touch i know that much, like touching cold human skin.. Ewww

I have caught a few in lake Taupo on luminous lures while fishing for trout at night.
jools, Any stats about aquarists occuring in the wild, regardless of catfish population? I am observing a correlation between percentage of aquarist in the general population and the percentage of the general population occuring in the wild here in the Bay Area. Is this just a local anomoly or does the data support a positive correlation world wide?
Conversely, Scotland has a shrinking population (less than 5 million now) but apparently an increasing catfish keeping population. Bears further study... ;-)
