Thank you:)

I counted 180 eggs from the above picture, so I guess there are around 200 eggs. Its been 48 hours, and I have only lost and removed one egg. This could be the big one

I think 1% loss on eggs is very low.

We will see tomorrow or the day after. Leakage before hatching is my main concern. It usually happens around 24-36 hours before the eggs should hatch. Luckily I only work from 11.00-16.00 tomorrow, so I can clean and assist the eggs/fry if necessary.

from spawn 6 days than they hatch, normally the males is quite good "fathers" and only if there are several males in the same aquarium you can have some trouble, I only use 1 male with all plecos because it's much safer.

They hatched after 6 days with very few losses. I will count them when I move them to the raising tank in a few days time.

I moved the fry to different raising tanks. The total number was 158 I think.

Excellent. I expect the "I think" is the same as when I catch and move fish - it's very hard to CATCH and count at the same time - they tend to move about, and you sort of loose count when you go after a fish...

Interesting blog - I have a group of 5 L240's for the last few months which I acquired from 2 different sources with the aim of spawning- 2 larger fish about 7-8" and 3 smaller fish around 4-5". I am sure I have at least one male - it is the largest fish with the biggest fins, a rounded nose and small tubercules near the end of the nose on the sides - it is also the most aggressive! Other fish I'm not so sure - the 2nd largest fish looks like a female - the nose is much narrower and pointed and it is a fatter fish around the pectorals - also this fish never enters a cave (sites on top) unlike the male. I will try and post some pics soon but any further advice about sexing and spawning experiences of this species would be gratefully received! :)

Please post pictures of your fish, and we will try to help with the sexing.

The next spawn will happen quite soon. This time I will let the male take care of his business. The water in the main tank is close to 100% RO, and I will keep bacteria to a minimum by not feeding from the time of the spawn to the hatching.

Does anybody please have any ideas on the sex of these L240?

My thoughts were:

Fish 1 - quite aggressive and spends time in slate cave, nicest colouration/pattern, thickened 1st ray of pectoral fins, rounded nose with bristles on side of nose. Confident this is a male.

Fish 2 - Rounded nose but head not as broad as fish 1 and no bristles on nose. pectoral ray not as thick as fish 1. Sub dominant male or female?

Fish 3 - Smaller spots, not as dark base (photo shows fish paler than normal due to being caught). More pointed nose. Never enters cave. Fairly confident this is a female.

From what I can tell, if you feed them properly, females will "egg" up quite quickly - of course, that's with , not L240 - but I'd expect them to be similar.

Hi,

Fish 1 & 2 are males, fish 3 is 100% sure a female!
