The patterning makes me think they're (Jags) quite a bit smaller than previously thought - how big are they?

Have to admit to being surprised to see them myself that small, but it works out perfect for me as it gives them lots of time to grow. I'd been offered some about 2", but the supplier of these (now out of stock as far as I know) did them at excellent prices - have to admit to expecting to see L.morrowi when they arrived, so was chuffed to see they are true jags.

Now those I would have loved to have seen!
FYI these aren't the ones NHA had - they are in the 6-7"+ region - stunning fish but huge! My LFS had 4 in last week, and they are now crammed in behind some rocks in a display tank! The fish above came from Trimar (by courier), and between Alison and I, I think we got all they had left. Alison has offered to keep them all in quarantine until i am able to pop over and collect my 'tiddler' as soon as I have the time.

Yes, agreed. The size quoted is for the smallest one - I think the other two are big enough (looking at the image again, I'd say 2-3" and 3-4" respectively) to not be a real worry.

Well, I saw what you meant. There were sufficient and some rare fishes, like vulture cats. But a lot of non -fishracks were indeed almost empty. I've spoken to the manager and they're working on it. Being an independant LFS, this may cause them more trouble than (and maybe because of) their huge neighbour Zajac. Also the shop is still young (2 years).
They expect new S-Am imports from half January onwards. Very nice and helpful people. I will certainly keep in touch with der Fisch-Profi!

the fish were definitely worth it.

also: the prices!! it's rare these days finding any LFS wich doesn't want an arm and a leg attached to the price
this one ewas extremely decent priced.

for a mere 8E I got myself a pretty Hypostomus (yes, Hypo, not a Ptery-common plec).
he's already close to 15 cm/6" and for this amount of money you have a common plec here, but even then only in the cheaper LFS.
I'll post a pic soon (it's remarkably visible), cause I suck at determinating these.

the fishes in the Fischprofi also included a nice batch of real non hybrid Synodontis schoutedeni, a HUGE Synodontis decorus (about 1 foot), the Calophysus, stunning adult Chalceus macrolepidotus for an absolute bargainprice, some Doradids (Agamyxis, Platydoras etc), all kinds of L numbers and so on.

Yup, definitely a shop worth checking from time to time.

the other 2 were also well stocked.

Tilmann (Hobby Zoo) was crammed with great fish (when isn't it crammed with great fish?), and this is by far the best set up shop I know at the moment.
it has real decorated tanks, live plants in with the fish and growing (not bundled up), a piece of bogwood in every single tank (!!), healthy fish, cheap and rare species.
this is the shop that supplies me with rare endangered captive bred Malagasy cichlids ;)
1 example: wich shop carries more than 4 different species of Silver Dollars? and other weird Characins....hint hint. Marc should get his camera out again. hint

Zoo Zajac was a LOT better than last time.
last time I found a shop full of pale, starving, unfed fish.
now the fishes looked well fed and healthy.
there were plenty oddballs too; Tatia perugiae, Opsodoras spp, Pimelodus maculatus or a similar spotted species, REAL Synodontis njassae -wich unfortunately were very expensive, real Synodontis angelicus, REAL Synodontis flavitaeniatus     , Hoplosternum punctatum labelled as 'Dianema' etc
as for noncatfishes they had plenty good choice too. I've seen all kinds of characins, barbs and others I haven't seen in ages

this was the very first time I've seen Chromidotilapia guentheri in a LFS instead of at the importer. this is THE African answer to the South American Geophagus and a fish wich gave me lots of joy -and offspring- back in the '90's.
yup, they definitely made a good change

unfortunately they also raised the prices of many fish. food and assortives are a lot cheaper than over here, but the fish tend to get pretty expensive, especially the rare kinds of.

all in all a good trip.

soon I'll check up on the missing shops in Germany I can reach without attempting a pilgrimage :foggie:

I heard some good reviews about "Aquahaus" in Dulmen. I haven't visited it (yet) but mr. Uwe Werner (not the least) for example told me it was a decent shop with mostly healthy and interesting fish:

you're a source of unknown shops :D

Dulmen doesn't ring any bells though.
is it located in or near the Ruhrgebiet or at least Nordrhein-Westfalen?

hate to find out it's near Leipzig or Dresden or so.

edit: damn, it's one of those internet shops that don't want to cooperate unless you become a member.
that kind of spoils it, cause I'm oldfashioned enough to believe in this ancient relic called 'personal privacy'.

they don't have any links on their site wich point out an edress or opening hours or anything.
too bad.

I once made the big huge ffin mistake of ordering fish through internet by courier and was ripped off by getting sick, emaciated fish of wich the lot died within days and after complaing to the sender I was given the polite equivalent of The Finger

a mistake I do not want to repeat. I don't buy fish unseen. once was more than enough.

No idea about the and I'm not sure, but I think the woodcat would eat youngshrimp, likely safe with adults.

May not be a good idea to revive an old thread, but I see no reason to start a new thread with the same theme. So yeah, I will revive this:

What tops your wish list in 2014? What would you answer this time?

As for me, I probably haven't thought it through, but my initial response is this: I don't have room for more fish at this time, so new acquisitions aren't the priority. But I would like to see more of the fish I already have get busy spawning. My mindset tells me that if my fish are spawning, then they must be happy and healthy - and that means I'm doing something right as their keeper/steward....

But give me a month and I'll probably find SOME spp. I want. :-)
...
.... Okay, I didn't need a month. You folks seem to like wood cats. I've never seen any in a store, but there is one that is colorful and odd looking - - that I'd be interested in. Do they play well in a community tank? Are they difficult to care for or breed?

I wish more people did this. The forum has been running for 11 years and I often think, when I see a new thread, that there was a thread about that where the OP has declined or not bothered to seek and add to the existing thread.

It adds value because all the contributors to the old thread are notified of the new thread and the forum faithful are often saved responding to the same question often with the same reply. Alternatively it is also interesting to read what we thought about something a few years ago and see if views have changed. It is, however, not always easy to find old threads at least in terms of time.

I haven't thought about Christmas yet, so I look forward to hearing some others ideas.
