but Oliver Frank had a tiny tank full
of youngsters and I spotted them.
now Arjan's got a nice group.
when they get bigger they will be very visible!
it's one of the funniest south American catfish for the hobby.

in my not so humble opinion the non parasitic trichomycterids are among the funniest and liveliest catfish for the hobby
this Ituglanis species has everything that makes a great catfish.
it's peaceful, not territorial at all and quite social too
it's not a piscivore (fry doesnt count) and not a parasite
it's hardy. unlike the smaller Trichomycterus or the huge Eremophilus, this one will survive heatwaves in summer easily
it's easy to keep. it accepts any prepared food and can handle fresh as well as detritus-rich water, so if you skip a few waterchanges, you're not in trouble
it's visible! especially when kept in a group, you'll see it in broad daylight, and it'll show up anytime at feeding times.
it's not fussy with waterparameters. it's not suitable for a Malawi tank, but tapwater in a tank with bogwood is plenty good enough.
the few drawbacks are that it's not just lively, but hyperactive at feedings and a bit of a rowdy. it's just a very enthousiastic fish with a certain puppy-factor.
fragile easily stressed tankmates are not a good idea.
it's also a glutton of the worst kind and very efficient at pounding down huge amounts of food. combining it with slow picky eaters (small ageneiosus for example, or Twig Cats) will cause trouble for the latter.

Would a combination with Dianema work?
I don't think Dianema are very agressive feeders, but then, feeding from the top will enhance the chances Dianema get - hence the question

the tank is too small and i think Ituglanis is too much of a rowdy for the shy and easily stressed Dianema.
with fish like Hoplosternum littorale in a larger tank: great match
but in a 3 footer with 8 Dianema? not so great.
