The photo contest is officially up! You can view it Here. To vote, you click on "rating" under each of the pictures, and give the picture a score between 1-10, with 10 being the highest, and 1 the lowest rating. You are judging picture composition, focus, and representation of the species. There is now a post in the site announcements recapping the rules for the contest, also.
Good luck to everyone, and thanks again for the wonderful turnout and patience while we worked out the best method for this.

I'm still confused. Do I have to vote on all submissions, so that the score is an average of everyone who voted on each pic, or do I only score the one I like best?

Yes, all scores are averaged, so you vote on however many pictures you like. At the end, the picture with the highest mean score wins.

Ok, I am going to rate them all then because it seems the most fair that way.

When will the results be in?
Posted: 31 Dec 2003, 23:50
by Barbie
Well technically, the results are in, and voting has been disabled, as of the 29th, just waiting on Rusty to get the script finalized to show the winners is all The 1st place picture was submitted by plesner, and is of a Synodontis sp. (7). Rusty said the page should be up today, so I'll post a link and announce it when it is. You can sort the pictures by rating, if you'd like to see who placed where, for now.

I'm curious if there is a better way to rate the pictures - it doesn't seem fair if one picture gets 20 votes and a 6 average while another picture may get only 2 votes and a 7 average.
IMO the average works well IF there is the same amount of ratings points as there are entries and everyone has to cast votes for all the pictures for their vote to be counted. Then the average will work.
If there is less voting point options then pictures to vote for , a points TOTAL would better show the winner.
At least in my humble opinion.
I think the idea for the contest is great and I hope it will grow.
A link to it on the home page would probably help a lot too and from what I understand it is in the works.

INXS,
Thanks for your feedback. We do appreciare feedback and this is a site where the Mods and Admin people take user opinions to heart. We are currently discussing the voting process to see if there is a more fair way to do it and your points are well taken. If others out there have opinions on how to make the next contest better please let us know.
I agree with you that this is a super new feature and the kudos mainly go to Barbie and Rusty.

Earlier in the thread we mentioned photoshopping pictures. I just got one that I really like, but the flash caused a lot of waterspots to show up on my glass. It is allowable to try to get these out of the picture as long as I don't alter the subject?

Actually there will be another contest, that should have been announced and scheduled to end the 15th, but with Rusty sick I was holding off a bit before pushing the next one. If it sounds alright to everyone, we'll leave the entries open until the 20th, and there will be voting for 10 days this time, instead of the 15. That should be plenty long enough to allow for voting, and still allow enough entries. I'll post an announcement to that effect in the Site Announcements section this evening.

Where can we vote for the pics? And when will the next contest start? I have some great pics but it looks like I just missed the deadline.

Dunno if it's me (properly is) but i cant seem to find the latest Competition pictures for voting. I seem to look and click on older links to find them. Could be me not looking hard enough i suppose or not reading up on where they are. It's been runing well for a while now and maybe a section should be displayed?

Actually the instructions and what not for each month's contest are in the Announcements section. This month's contest has been delayed a bit to let Rusty get the script we need to run it properly in place. Sorry for any confusion
