Shane wrote:I am OK with moving the above fish to Chaetostoma, though I have a nagging feeling it might be one of the closely related genera, like Dolichancistrus or Leptoancistrus. However, despite an hour's worth of work I can not key it out. Too many of these genera require a sexually mature male to key out.
Yeah, I laboured over that too (). But nothing matches so it's "go with " for now. Will send you the DATZ on L402.

If you have some good pics I can take a look. There are several characteristics that separate Chaetostoma from Ancistrus aside from tentacles. You can count caudal peduncle plate rows (3 in Ancistrus, 5 in Chaetostoma); presence of fleshy ornamentation on premaxillae-dentaries (present in Chaetostoma, absent in Ancistrus); interorbital distance (large in Ancistrus, short in Chaetostoma); and cheek odontode shape (either straight or strongly recurved in Chaetostoma, straight and just distally recurved in Ancistrus).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gustavo

Gustavo, welcome to Planet Catfish (although I did see that you've been a member for some time).

The pictures of the fish in question are available on the new page that I created today:

Gustavo,
This is the characteristic I tried to focus on without luck. Maybe you can see it better. I am on a Kindle Fire.

Hello guys,

Sorry to be SO late, but I definitely visit planet catfish way eventually. Nevertheless, take a look at the ventral pic showing the mouth. This specimen clearly shows tentacles, so it's Ancistrus. In addition, from the lateral pic I see it shows three caudal-peduncle plate series, so, again, it's Ancistrus.

Best wishes,

Gustavo
