yeah, but me too.
My tap water has a GH from 3° and a KH from 1° this might be a conductivity from less than 300...

hey that's my text :D
Although I felt a little dwarfish near all those big names and pro's (me and my 300 liter tank and 180 liter tank) I really had a fantastic weekend.
Although I didn't know a lot off people there (I came to Hanoover alone), I'm boosted to be more online and to setup more offline (probably tank setups, diy's and breeding attempts).
Hope to see more in 2 years,

That's a great shirt ! Must have been friday, didn't see it.

I also saw a statement in the event magazine coming from Jools/Planet CAtfish that said something like "All of my fishes suck".

(I myself was thinking about making a bumpersticker saying "My hobby sucks!" combined with a pleco pic )

Regarding the lecture:
Johannes Leuenberger - Vermehrung von schwer züchtbaren Harnischwelsen am Beispiel von Baryancistrus sp. (L 177)
(eng: The Breeding of hard to breed L7numbers e.g. Baryancistrus sp. L177 )

He mentioned a famous DIY food recipe from the Basel Zoo, from which he excluded the flesh ingredients and replaced them with more vegitarian ingredients.... can anyone give me more information on this recipe?
One of the special ingredients was powder of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica).

Hi Jeroen,

Hannes got the recipe from Dani Marörin, a nice guy of the Zoo in Basel.
I know that Dani is always changing the ingredients for testing. This was the last information I got from him while my last visit.
As I know next to some Banana he also uses powder of Spirulina and/or Chlorella algae combined with some vegetables like broccoli or similar. In original Dani uses complete fish (with head, fins and fishbone) and also Shrimps grinded, but I think Hannes reduced this ingredients.

Its a long time ago Hannes had a talk about the breeding of Lamtichthys filamentosus by Dani Madörin. In this talk he gave a note for the recipe of the food.

by the way:
The event was very, very nice!
Even if I was there just in the evening of friday and satureday.
I enjoyed spendig this time with a lot of Experts from all around the world.
Specially it was nice to see all my non-german friends like Jools, Håvard, Jørn, Erlend and all the others again.

best regards
Norman

ho jeroen,
i just got a mail from hannes today about the recipe as i also keep a few bary's...
if i can send it on i will do so if not ...then not :)

let's me ask...o.k.

i also made already a few recipies ...and i was not far away with my ingredients like:
Fresh spinach leafes
Carrotts
Spirulina algae (dust)
Fresh Paprika
Zucchini
whole shrimps (frozen)
some times fish (frozen)

now the vegi meal is very filling then the meat version with fish shrimps artemia (decapsuled) mussells...fish tabs...etc...
as baryancistrus have a small belly like for examples tropheus moori...they will get trouble digesting meat that takes longer than vegetarian food...specially with baryancistrus also INGO told me lots of people make the mistake to feed a lot of tablets and stuffing foods...

try to find out what your fish eat (single vegies) add large whole shrimps...also mysis(little shrimps) but only to 1/4 to 1/5 of the rest of the ingrediants!

i will soon make such a mix...posted later :) first i have to set up my new barytank :) 130x70x70cm  but more to this in a new thread ...starting tonight (GMT) :D
more L47 i bought during the L-wels days will arrrive on tuesday :)

very nice pics at first glance (@work ye know ), I'll pick em up tonight to take a good look

for the recipe of diy food: for me it's only for my soniae's (l137), they grow pretty fast currently on jbl tabs, JanBoerlage's mix (pees & mysis & other, got it through meetings of dutch cichl*d club NVC), standard flakes and a weekly fresh endive leaves.

But I want to have more knowledge and influence on the food, just like you don't eat allready-prepared-food yourself every day ( or do you 8) )

Great photographs !

On page six and page seven of the photographs, there are a lot of photographs showing a lot of different hypancistrus that were cross bred and then pictures of their hybrid fry.
I am not critising, or anything like that, i have only ever seen pictures of the odd hybrid fry on the web, yet there was nearly all the species of hypancistrus crossed with other ones, and they all had fry from the breedings, just wondering why try such a thing ?

Hi Andrew,

they weren´t done "on purpose". Most of those shown by Rolo were from quite some time ago when we didn´t know that Hypancistrus hybridize so easily. He then just sat down and tried to find out who else had accidentally created hybrids and found that there was a frightening number of them.
In his talk, he used those to show that there is no phenotypical characteristic that prevents hybridization, neither colour pattern, size, locality, nor differences in fry development.
And Rolo finished his talk with quite a strong plea to keep Hypancistrus species separated at all times, and with the present situation, chances are high that a lot more hybrids are already around than we think. I can only second that. Just imagine: how would you spot a hybrid of L 66xL 333?
This talk in conjunction with Hans´ and Ingo´s talks should really be a bright red warning sign for those dealing with wormline Hypancistrus..

Cheers, Sandor

Thanks Borbi
I didn't know that hypancistrus would hybridize so easily, though i do keep my hypancistrus in species only tanks, but that was just incase of hybridization, and i'm glad i have been doing that now.

always a good idea to keep em seperated Andrew
in this lecture it was even shown that different sizes like l46 and l260 can cross breed.. :?

Hi,

in this respect, I believe it is save to state that every species of Hypancistrus can just as easily hybridize as they are bred "purely". So if you have two pairs of different Hypancistrus species in a tank, you have a 50% probability of hybrids. This is basically also what Rolo stated.
Hypancistrus are a REAL mess in this respect. And remember: they are quite fertile and can even double-cross (so hybrid x different hybrid)! [SARCASM]As a cynic stated: this way you can preserve at least four L-Numbers in a single fish.[/SARCASM]

And as we now already know about a hybridization in Leporacanthicus, keeping species separate is always a good idea. I would even like to extend that to L-Numbers, regardless if they are assigned to the same species. Considering them local varieties or "color morphs" or whatever you like to call them, keeping them "clean" for preservation in our tanks should be one of the prime objectives for dedicated breeders.

Cheers, Sandor

This would lead me to this question: In nature where multiple species of hypancistrus coexist could there be hybrids naturally occuring? :?: This could explain alot of cool/rare hypans IMO. Just a thought.

Hi,

..Rolo also alluded to that possibility (L400 is a possibility).
The more interesting question is then: what is a separate species and where are variants? :an:

The simple answer is: we don´t know, and if we will know at some point is difficult to say.
For me, this is speciation in action.

coexisting = syntop
see first photo in part 7 of the photo links above...
no doubt in nature this also happens, but which when and where is the question,
like sandor states we don't know... could be there are only a few supertypes of hypancistrus..

In this spotlight there is an interesting book about Lake Victoria ci*hlids (species swarm) written by Tijs Goldschmindt, but I only know the dutch version..

Dear Participants, Dear interesting people at planet,
by now, the 1. International L-Numbers Days are already over.
We would like to take the opportunity now to express our thanks to all participants and interested folks for the amazing participation at this event and the great feedback. Also a number of different internet forums are included in our thanks, as only through their help we managed to reach so many L-Numbers-Interested in so short a time.
Of course, we would also like to thank our sponsors again, as without their support such an event would not have been possible. First and foremost this is our main sponsor and co-organizer, the Panta Rhei GmbH (http://www.panta-rhei-aquatics.de) and of course the executive board of the IG BSSW, who where always there to help with words and deeds. A special thank also goes to the treasurer Annegret Ott, who did an outstanding job managing the finances.
We are indebted to the following sponsors:
- Metop Aquarium, http://www.metop-aquarium.cz

During our initial planning, we expected to have about 60 participants and were hoping for about 100. Taken all together however, we had more than 140 participants from 14 different nations.
Right now, we are collecting pictures from the event. As soon as we have a decent average of all three days, we will also publish them on the start page of the 1. International L-Numbers Days webpage, to give an impression of this event also to those who could not join us.
We consider this large number of participants as well as the atmosphere in Hannover a tremendous success. This reassures us to begin planning for the 2. International L-Numbers Days soon. But for this, we need your help once more.
We developed a short questionnaire, where we address some things related to the event. Please try to answer these points as honest as possible. It would not help us if you just tried to be nice. Constructive criticism is explicitly welcome. If there are points missing in this questionnaire you would also like to express some criticism about, please just add it freely.

Some of these questions can be answered from people that hasn't gone to the convention, too. So we are also interested in those meanings.

We are now eagerly awaiting your answers and suggestions, because only with those we can really make this event even better.

Please send your answers either via email to andreas.tanke@l-wels-tage.de, oder or via FAX to +49 5032 9492417.

Thanks for all

Andreas
