I think so too. Thus - hoping Richard doesn't mind - here's a new one:

If I were a human, I could be called Popov (for instance).
Both my scientific names are derived from local names.
I am not from the Amazon.

way too confusing for me.....

there are several famous peeps called Popov, but if it's the clown, well...
Clownbotia's are no catfish and Panaque maccus the Clown Pleco IS from the Amazon.

or did you mean the Russian swimmer?

good one

but if I think about clowns, wellll, they're supposed to be funny, right?

and knowing Marc with his liking for British humor and funny word puns, my guess would be Conta conta

not in the least because the Dutch 'kont' means buttocks.

Conta conta would equal the famous Arthur Two Sheds. :beardy:

Don't search too deeply.
My first and last scientific name are not the same. I'm not referring to a swimmer, but to the tears. Alex is on the right track with his suggestion of common funnyness. I also need a lot of oxygen.
A relative of mine was in the news some months ago. Some believed he was a ****** Ninja Turtle. Nasty teeth he has.

Holy shit that was a good guess.

Right it's gonna be hard, Silurius chipped in for a few seconds last night and then disapeared so I'm gonna try and lure, him back along with Rupert, and Jools.

My body is plated both dorsally and laterally completely but not necessarily ventrally.
Some of my cousins have fleshy tentacles but I have none.

Can I ask several questions at once:
1. Max size > 15 cm SL?
2. Dorsoventrally flat or relatively tall build?
3. Evertible interopercular odontodes or not?
4. Spots, lines, irregular pattern or "single colour?

Nah, just elminiating a whole bunch of them in one question. I expect it's a something-ancistrus of some sort. But that's still a reasonable count... Even if we remove the ones with no spots, I'd say there are a hundred or so left.

even with Marc's explanation I still wouldn't have guessed it in about a million years or so

I have a very visual imagination. hence I'm really bad at abstract puzzles......

you can ashow me a picture of an unknown fish and I'll know or guess in an educated way what it is, what it eats, where it lives, how big it'll get, anything.

can't make much from this.

a wild guess for the new one: The Common Brown Bristlenose Ancistrus domesticus?

2. Dark brown or black base?
3. White spots?
4. Eats "meat"?
5. Described species or L-number/cf/aff?

Reassuring to know i'm not as dumb as i think i am

I'll try & make it a little tougher this time.

I was scientifically described after Richard was born.
I am as ugly as they come. (although this is subjective - it's not a visually attractive fish)
I have no "photo" in cat-e-log.
The 2nd half of scientific name sounds like an italian footballer!
