No one has really said if they want to overnight or not. However it would be up to the individual to book a room. That said, I know a few local hotels, so if we do overnight, then we will agree a place and descend on it en masse.

I'd be up for an overnight - simply for the reason it's a pretty long drive to drive there and back again in one day.

I knew this would happen! How about I put three dates on in a poll and everyone votes for the best date. Another point to bear in mind is that Shane may be visiting mid June. Maybe a weekend in June? Seems a long way off I know.

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't matter WHAT date you choose, someone will be unable to take part... :-(

I'm sure that's the reality, however, if I stick a poll in place then we can minimise those who cannot make it.

So, if we go for 12/13 May, and also 9/10 June (Shane will hopefully be here), does anyone else want to suggests a weekend date I will add a poll. Suggestions in for the 17th April please.

So what's the current state of this. Is the 12/13th of May still on, or not?

No. What I've decided to do for lots of reasons to complex to waste bandwidth with is to go for the weekend of 16/17 June (hoping both racoll and Mats can make it?) Shane and I should be there too.

This ties in nicely with an earlier post of mine :D
on the other hand,, you could come down this Saturday, stay over night,, get up early, visit pier in Wigan,
Then onto BAS in Bolton, then head for dinner at The Highfield working mens club in Darwen, and whilst there bid on a few things at the CSG spring auction, which is being held at the same location, Oh! yes and the Bar will be open.
Although the spring auction has taken place already there is a CSG meeting on that Sunday.

I'll probably be in the UK that weekend and I'd love to attend if possible. How far is it from Central London?

You'd love some of the big pims at Pier. I am not sure about the time but I would guess about 4 hours drive? You could also think about the train and then a taxi to get to the first stop - once you're there I am sure someone would offer you a lift around.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it but can you post the exact details of location, schedule etc when they are finalized.

The rough idea will be:

Hit BAS (Bolton) & Pier (Wigan) from around 1PM-5PM Saturday. Go to hotel (probably Britannia or Bel Air), get some dinner, retire to bar, where Shane and I will talk to anyone listening (or buying beer :-) ) but I guess to talk over what we've seen in terms of fish.

Sunday: Breakfast and back to the shops to buy fish, say goodbyes and then home (there's an option to go to the CSG meeting for those heading North). There's not been an interest in a bus or coach from Scotland, so I guess most of us will be coming in cars.

I may be able to make it on the 16th, but it's my wife's birthday on the 18th, which probably means party on the 17th [and probably preparation on the 16th, so being out all day on the 16th may not be the greatest idea - one of the problems with having a hundred relatives living nearby is that you need to have a lot of guests at any of the family events...]

Sorry, I'll probably have to sit this one out...

I'd recommend taking the train from Euston Station in London to Wigan. There's a non-stop train that takes you from Euston to Wigan North Western in 3:07. That's about 500 yards or so from Pier Aquatics, so minutes with a taxi. Lowest cost according to http://www.nationalrail.co.uk is £32 - but that may not be the price you pay on the day - however, it shouldn't be more than £59.70, as that's the "cheap day-return" price, which is usually available on the day of travel.

Manchester airport on the other hand is 27 miles (43 km) away from Wigan, on motorways that are (in my experience) quite busy and slow. RAC route planner suggests that this journey takes 32 minutes, but I would say probably more like 45-60 minutes. Taxi (one-way) will cost you probably in the region £30-50 or more...

Add to the travel time that airports want you to be there an hour before boarding time, and stuff like that, and you're probably looking at pretty equal travel-time with train or plane. And unless you're flying from "LCY" (London City Airport), all of Londons airports are pretty far from London City.

Here here! Anyone attending an accomplished barb breeder? I have a couple of spp of very attractive local barbs that I would love to see become established in the hobby.

I came across some cheap flight to London... I will have to check the dates to see if they work. Maybe make more than a weekend of it too. I can also collect on the Beers Jools will owe me for the Planet Premiership.

Cheers, Whitepine

Now that _would_ be cool. Seriously though, I think there are flights into Manchester from Seattle direct. If memory serves, British midland fly it.
