I haven't posted here in a while but I can't believe some of the stuff I have read here flaming this guy. First of let me be the first person here to offer a real solution to this problem. Put the fish down. It will not live a normal life and any kind of surgury will most likely kill the fish anyway. I understand that this is a well loved pet but things happen and I understand that(unlike some of the ecological extremists that posted earlier) I understand that the fish is fine now but it won't be for ever.. I had to put down my favorite arowana due to a swim bladder problem and it was the hardest thing I have had to do in a while. I have heard horror stories about some of the people on this site ripping people a new a-hole but have never seen it till now.. chill out people you act like the guy did this on purpose. if all of you would read post completly you would see that the toy was dropped in by someone else. you would also see that the post he replied to about the money for surgury had been removed. sorry about your fish and good luck with whatever you decide to do.

came acrossed this post...I hope the object was indeed removed. I know many vets or even human surgeons would jump on the chance to remove such an item for free just to say they did it. Hopefully that fish didn't suffer too long with an object in it's belly and has had the object removed.

The redtail eating the diver in the first place: Accident.
Leaving it where it is and saying things like: "2 Months later, he is more energetic then he ever was. He is living with a rather large objeect in his stomach and he is eating and going about his normal daily business JUST FINE (!). Probably even more hyper then he once was."
That is why people are flaming.
Can anyone tell me why he's "even more hyper then he once was"???

It just beyond belief...

I agree - what a pack of fish psychos - He did not stuff the ornament down the fish's throat. It was clearly an unfortunate accident. On the positive side, his post will make us all aware of what can happen and to be careful ourselves.

Hey, why dont you contact your local animal welfare center or zoo and see if they can help at no cost to your self

Guess no one had anthing to say about the DIY surgury I recommended. I think it would be sucessful but maybe euthanasia would be best if you have finished with your side show, so please put it out of it's misery as I doubt you had serious plans for it's ultimate space demands. I'm not "flaming" you, because you brought us into your kitchen. I could stand the "heat" and I have practical experience that I felt sharing with you would be cheap and just as likely to work as any vet's procedure would. Ultimately the fish's fate in in your hands.
I understand this was an accident and never suggested otherwise but nobody else ventured an option that you can afford and has a good chance of working because they are a resilient species. I have performed drastic surgury on fish as delicate as wild discus among others. The hyperactivity is likely related to increasing distress in the catfish. I am truly interested in the outcome if you decide to do something to remove the foreign object. We'll all learn more from that than sidestepping into politcally correctness in an on-line forum.

there is a lesson learned in this for newbies to fish...
never ever put something small enough for a catfish to swallow ...as they will!! doesn't matter what it is...if it fits in the mouth it's fair game!
