The hot chocolate thing is more about who consumes (or should I say used to consume ;) ) it.

Now I'm thinking, who drank hot chocolate/cocoa first? The Mayans and Aztecs (if you believe Wikipedia). There is the Mayan Sea Catfish, . But that doesn't fit the other half of the clue (unfathomable, perplexing). Hmmmmmm...
