The first part of my genus name implies I'm not genuine.
My species name is the same as that of the "godfather" of all loricariids.
The person who described me is (was?) a (translated!) bird and studied those as well.
I was described in the year Diamond Dogs was released.

This next one might be mistaken by some for a loach, but is otherwise spotless.

One from the past.

- I went twice to the barbershop for I don't want to look like a ZZ-Top musician. However, I'm a fish from the present.
- My genus name sits in a song by a UK band of which one member is a combination of a well known PC member and a part (county if you like) of where I (MvA, not the fish) live - and often mistakenly used for the whole country....
- I could be a female dancer, if I weren't a fish
- Both of my synonyms have the species name I currently have

?

Short beard - brevibarbis.
"Gogo" dancer.
Two synonyms with different generic names but same specific name.

I'm not sure about which song you mean, but I did find the musician called Jools Holland. :)

If you did not have a peek at pages 9 & 10 of this thread, I must say you're very good!
It took people a lot longer to find this one out (in 2009 b-)).

The song is "I think I'm gogo" by Squeeze, which used to be the band Jools Holland played in.

May I be rude and jump in? What lustrous South American is an anagram of "A Cannibals Sexy Truth Slur"?

I didn't, but it was quite tempting to check if I was right! I got it by searching for all species with "barbis" in their name, and then narrowing it down to "brevibarbis" and finding a genus that fitted.

Coming up with riddles is difficult, though!

This next one is a lessepsian migrant that has, in one country, gotten nicknamed after a Hezbollah leader by fishermen. It is not included as one of the common names in the Cat-eLog.

I liked that one, shakes things up a bit! :)

The country is actually Israel and the nickname is the "Nasrallah fish".

correct!

I'm originally from Israel, so that is why I am familiar with this common name. :) The official Hebrew name for it is "Sfamit arsit", meaning more or less "Venomous moustache" with moustache being in the feminine form.

According to Israeli media Nasrallah's response was not quite negative - He is translated into Hebrew as saying more or less "They say that this fish is pretty and charming. I thank them for thinking that I am like that". He then proceeds to threaten Israel with his catfish venom.

It isn't every day that a catfish works its way into Middle Eastern politics, so I thought it would make a good riddle. :)

I know this is kind of a dead thread, but I think I have a good one and I'd really like to post it.

The first five letters of my subfamily name, and the entirety of my species name both refer to reptiles. One prehistoric, and one mythological.

(If not that, my other guess is , but in a hurry I couldn't find a subfamily name for this one)

Yep, you got it. :D

SARCOglanidinae (subfamily), SARCOsuchus (prehistoric crocodile). Draco is obvious.

Kungfish, that was a good one. Your reference to a "mythical" reptile narrowed it down a lot. :-)

Yeah, it did. :P Maybe I should have phrased it differently, but I can't really think of any other way to describe a dragon. Maybe I should have said "fake", as that doesn't have to be a dragon (well… mythological doesn't have to be a dragon, but there are no wyvern catfish… right?).

Here's another one. I am very perplexing, and I (probably) enjoy hot chocolate.

*edit* Unfathomable may be a better word than perplexing.

Close… actually no. Not close at all. XD

Nobody has come close.

Clues:
It's not an armored catfish.
"Hot chocolate" is not a reference to any physical characteristics.

Hmmm, from your initial post, "It (probably) enjoys hot chocolate." When I think of hot chocolate, I think of the Swiss (in American grocery stores, nothing says "good hot chocolate" like Swiss chocolate). So I tried searching the site for the keyword "Swiss" and all I got were hits for SwissTropicals - I guess that approach won't work! ~X(
