I knew, but it couldn't be your fish because it has no common names

i) I might have converted on the road to a middle eastern capital (famously associated with sword smithing).

I have a sword from there but I could only find a Brazilian reference for the same name.
Clueless on the first part of the clue....Battle for Madrid, 1936?
?

Hmm, Interesting guess. But not the fish I'm thinking of.
ii) Further south and further east than Spain. (The metalworking technology which made Spain famous for swords was, I believe, brought there by the folks I'm thinking of when they conquered most of it).
iii) Waaay earlier than 1936. The conversion in clue i) probably happened circa AD 36.

I can't find any fish related to Tarsus or Christ fish (although I thought some Ariidae were called as such).
I've found 3 blind species:
Blind Cave Bristlenose - Ancistrus formoso
Blind Cave Catfish - Prietella phreatophila
Blind Whale Catfish - Cetopsis fimbriata ,
but none of these seem to make sense wrt the clue.
In short, NOT (yet)!

Good one! I think I plugged every other associated word into the 'free search genus/species' search bar..except Saul, just tried it and guess what was the only fish to come up? I even tried visigoths...
Got sidetracked by these waterwheels in Syria -these are cool - need to make a version for my pond...still a learning thread

Slightly overdue I'm afraid.....
New fish:
1) Both my genus and species name refer to ichthyologists
2) Although one of them was actually an ornithologist
3) I was recently described
4) I'm pretty small
5) I have no picture (yet)

Is that in honour of
Dr. Gerlof Fokko Mees?
Truly, that is a name to conjure with.

Marc:
That's where I got it from: "I once asked him if he had any fishes at home. He said "No, I have them all here in the museum. They sit in tiny jars. It's kind of a hobby, really. In fact I am an ornithologist". I thought that was pretty funny. What's in a name? Mees literally translates into English as titmouse."
What's that called (for extra points) when someone is called something about what they do? A turtle specialist is Dr.Turtle and my local fire inspector is Mr.Smoke. We also have a Dr. Deady that work at the hospital
New fish!
Previously Listed Catfish
a) I'm South American and if I was a dancer, I'd be topless only.
b )I have no keepers but my buddy with almost the same name has several, I'm smaller and have large eyes and colouring that gave me my common name.
c) If there was a sloppy translation of my species name it may mean marked skin?
d) I have many pictures but none of them really shows my hooks.

torbanite:
Hemidoras stenopeltis ?
Absolutely.
Wonder why there's no close-up picture of the 'hook-like scutes'? That would be interesting to see.
All members of this family share a common feature in the row of hook like scutes running along the length of the fish, in all species of Hemidoras catfish this feature is quite subdued but still clearly visible.
It's all yours torbanite!

Most likely incorrect, but
is my first guess.
However, that leaves me with an extra inspector and a dean.....

Morse, Gadget & Sands are all (fictitious) Inspectors.

Ah, I knew the first two are, but thought Sands referred to David Dean Sands

New fish:
1) Part of my genus name tells you I could be a place where people to go to watch a play
2) My species name refers to where I'm from
3) Yours truly has had this species, yet didn't add it to his species list (for some unknown reason). The data sheet will prove this.
