Right family; wrong fish. Have another look at clues 3 & 4.
This riddle now goes over to your new host: Bas Pels.

One last clue (6) from me:
One of the African species meant in clues 3 & 4 has a number of pictures. 13 of them are made by 1 person. The name of that person can be found in my species name. Btw: although he has kept/still keeps (?) these fish, he's no registered keeper!
On the other hand: if you already are at that genus, you should know who I am.
That should really be enough clues

is an African catfish that reputedly exhibits brood care..
Can I reconcile that with the other clues..? No.
Must be time for bed.

Nice try though. I did expect this one to be very easy......
One more then (7): the African species is not a riverine species, but lives in a Ricky

Hey torbanite, I got the family but still can't get the clue trail straight. A few posts ago Marc said that
was the wrong fish but the right family: Pseudopimelodidae. Lots of '-glanis' and '-silurus' ?? Anything there ring a bell?
I clicked through a bunch of them but can't get the african connection
er, what's a ricky?

3) The first part of my genus name can also be found in (an) African species
Ricky Lake
Bas, it's all yours now.
Au revoir!

Nope
Due to some computerproblems, I was unable to come to this site yesterdat - and Í'm afraid these are still not repaired
I did expect the answer to be found sooner: the familie is known, and not big
another clue: 9) I'm amongst the largest catfishes in my river, but not the largest

No problem, I've been at a wedding.
How about the PacMan Catfish?
I can't get it to match all the clues but it's big and from a river.

Yup, I think that's the one, I also found that L.brevispinus has 13 pictures by the same person and it says this "Parents show elaborate care for both eggs and fry,"
I didn't guess that one earlier because I read the picture clue wrong....

That's it
it's the third largest catfis in its river, the Rio San Fransico, pacman is still a well known game....

torbanite:
Synodontis lucipinnis?
You squeaked that in while I was typing. You're so very close, these clues will get you on the money.
d. I was discovered just over a hundred years ago.
e. I look very different when young.
f. I have an overused common name. It's written on many tanks at fish stores but rarely accurately.

Nope, much less rare. I have many keepers but now I'm kind of tough to find even though my name is still written all over tanks at fish shops.

You're working too hard fixing all those bugs Jools, you messed up your clog
Jools :
?
Nope. The size is much closer though. Judging by the huge number of keepers, I was
much easier to find a while back. Some people seem to have found a fish like me recently but most are hybrids.
Clue B refers to my common name.

Well.. if it is not the False Cuckoo (S. lucipinnis), maybe it is the real Cuckoo..

torbanite:
Synodontis multipunctata?
Oo, I forgot about that bird reference, good one but not the right one. My fish has a bird reference in both it's common name and it's real name.
It's maybe just a little bit more popular keeper-wise than the Cuckoo catfish but easier to mistake a hybrid for one of these when young. My town has these in 4 different shops - all are hybrids
It's the only syno we see in these parts, unfortunately not the real thing. Too bad, it must be a nice fish, it has keepers in the triple digits...
