Whilst I'm happy to get the right answer, I'm not so keen on asking the new question...
This fish is number 2769 in the occurrence database - which won't help any of you, but I thought it would be nice for you to know this.
Here's some clues that hopefully will help:
- If you miss-spell my describer, you get part of my location.
- I'm a long member of my family.
- I'm the only representative of the genus in the Cat-eLog, and there are no registered keepers.

Right idea about poll and pool, but not the right species (or genus).

No, you were right about Poll and pool - you just need to find a different African species (in a different Family).

Maybe just found a bug with Poll, sent it to the Bug House. It pays to look through all these fish..

Don't think you found a bug - see the other post.

Thank you for resolving my non-bug

This is the correct answer - for some reason, I must have missed this post when I looked at the "Bug" post.

@ banana, nice guess! that's one of my alltime favo pl*co's! would you please update the list as i am a complete pc noob?
thnx!
eek, sorry DutchFry - I totally missed that!
You're not a PC Noob, the list can't be updated by others because I stuck it on a hidden page on my own website because it was so gigantic, we were getting to the point that if we posted it every time, it would take up half the page.
I try to update as quick as I can but sometimes I get distracted looking through posts or looking up fish..
Someday I'll try to convert it to Exel so I can put them into families etc, that would be interesting to see.
Here's the updated list:

And I threw you off all for nothing - no bug in the end
NEW FISH:
a) As usual, I'm a beauty, not at all like something from a horror film.
b) You might think of a Burt Reynold's film though -
c) Sometimes you may have to look closely to make sure I'm alive because an algae tab might land on my head but if it's not in my path, I may not notice it.

Perhaps
because it is a beauty from a horror film, i think, c) fits perfect to it and it always moves carefully slowly and silent, to kill small fish. (Burt Reynold's film: silent movie)

Nice to hear from you but not the fish, it's much prettier than that but has a horror film type name.
(Burt Reynold's film: silent movie)
Not the right film. Burt was pretty young and the film is somewhat creepy but in a violent sort of way.
it always moves carefully slowly and silent
Nope. This fish barely moves at all!
d) I'm from South America where many of my friends are from.

Surely the film is Deliverance, and the fish is a Banjo catfish.

Bunocephalus coracoideus

So very close and yup, it's the banjo but not that one. It's the one that's somehow associated with a horror-type film.
edit: Let me rephrase that to be more clear...looks funny on second read-through.

That's it!
Nice little fish eh? Too mellow for most corys, wow. Makes my peaceful fish look positively maniacal
Not to worry, I don't think it's too much of a steal, 'cos I think MatsP figured it out but he's not a big fan of making up the clues so maybe didn't want to guess again.

New fish:
1) I'm supposed to come from the land of fast flowing water
2) Sofar I'm undescribed
3) I have one registered keeper

5) In the past this land had 5 different European country names before its own name
6) The person referred to in 3) is rather familiar to me

I think that last clue was a nice present!
And you have some very nice fish - I hope these are available someday
. Never seen a single live tatia in my life and this one is especially sweet.
I'll go fishing in a minute, am just about to post about my new/old, chipped out of calcium tanks...2 45 gals
Previously Listed Catfish
New Fish:
a) I'm smallish and very CAT-fishy.
b) I have one keeper, unfortunately not L number Banana.
c) I'm spotty and was described about 150 years ago.
d) At least one of my genus makes a pretty loud noise.
e) I share my second name with many different kinds of catfish.

Nice find, 4 of the 5 clues fit nicely
However, clue d) did point me toward Doridae, but I was not aware Doras are noisy
Perhaps because I never kept them

thanx Bas, actually I was thinking Platydoras hancockii but it didn't fit the other clues!

Good one DutchFry!
That's the fish
Doras carinatus is the one that emits a noise according to the species page. Have no idea if they all do or not??
It says:
Can emit sounds by moving its pectoral spines. Every basic unit of sound emitted lasts for 60-70 millisecond, with a frequency of 60-90 Hertz corresponding to the reply frequency of the muscles utilized.
Cool.
Your Turn DutchFry

Afaik, most - if not all - Doradidae are able to produce sounds - just like many Auchenipteridae.

sorry guys, I've been working at the beach all day long and am very tired right now, so don't expect too much of the next riddle
random pick! so the odds are high it's a pleco again
- I am a pleco
- Very few people know my name
- I have no L number
- I come from Brasil and am quite small for a pleco
