What species is the Clown Pl*co
About a year ago, I bought 5 fish from a LFS. The were labeled Clown Pl#co's. What species are commonly sold with this monicker?
This will help me narrow down my search for more information on them.

There is a Common names section in the Cat-eLog

Whilst Dave is correct that there is a Common name list in the Cat-eLog, there's two (at least) species that are sold as Clown Pleco: is what it SHOULD be, but there's been some confusion in older books and "backtranslation" of the name can sometimes lead to .
There's also the possibility that is identified as P. maccus (they are pretty similar).

L105? They aren't particularly common - are you sure they are not small L104?
Either way, they should be similar to breed, not the easiest to get a spawn from, but doable. There's a thread on spawning LDA67 (which is a closely related species) here.

Anything under 5" with stripes and a suckermouth _could_ be sold as a clown pleco, the ones mentioned here are the common ones, but it could be anything.MatsP wrote:Whilst Dave is correct that there is a Common name list in the Cat-eLog, there's two (at least) species that are sold as Clown pl*co: is what it SHOULD be, but there's been some confusion in older books and "backtranslation" of the name can sometimes lead to .

Could we use Panaque maccus instead of L104? AFAIK, no one has bred this species.

Re: L104
I think Jools was saying that an L#, when ID'd, should be referred to by it's scientific name. (eg. not L046)Shaun wrote:Panaque maccus and L104 are different fish? I thought that was what the DATZ special was getting at...

Jools is right on the mark. Just as any plain colored inexpensive Hypostominae can be sold as a "common" pleco, just about any smaller Hypostominae with stripes seems to be a "clown" pleco. L. pardalis is the sp most commonly sold under the trade name "common" pleco and P. maccus is the sp most commonly sold as a "clown" pleco, but many, many other spp are also sold under these names.Anything under 5" with stripes and a suckermouth _could_ be sold as a clown pl*co, the ones mentioned here are the common ones, but it could be anything.

L104
The DATZ special book: http://www.planetcatfish.com/books/book ... cle_id=304
seems to imply that L162 is Panaque maccus and L104 is a similar, but not one and the same, species.
I may be very wrong.
