I had a pair of these
I had a pair of these fish, they lived for ages.
In fact I gave away my remaining female about 6 months ago â?? she was over 10 years old.
I think they come from west africa or maybe Zaire (rainforest areas I think) and prefer soft acid water â?? much like that of the S.Amercian species.
I had to split mine up because they were squabbling all the time â?? but they never bothered any of the other fish â?? I kept a few small tetras with them from time to time.
They were mainly active at night, and the spots on the flanks faded with age.

*Edit - they were in the region of 6" long
