now THAT's what I call baby granny's!
what's the diameter of that coin? it's a UK penny, but is it the same size as a quarter or so? say 20mm?
These lil fish are the size of LFS-sized captive bred petricola dwarfs or even smaller.
excellent job on showing true proof, Richard!
now -since it's fairly obvious there's no way whatsoever of finding out how these were bred (kinda hard to "distill" it from a pic)- I find the big fuzz beforehand about "not wanting to give away breeding secrets" quite unfounded.
but yup; looks like I've been beaten fair & square with trying to breed the Emperor Syno.
impressive job

Hi Sid
A uk 1p coin is indeed a 20mm diameter.
I am going to the GLEE trade event this weekend to see what is there - the breeder supposedly will have these on display & therefore it may become open as to who it is - how it was managed might be a different story, but i can ask! I will post further photos from the event if there is stuff worth seeing.
I am led to believe this individual is from the same batch as the one graham s has which makes me wonder if we're misunderstanding growth rate or has there been more than a single spawning? Again, if i can find anything out of significance, i'll pass it on.
Keep us all posted as to how yours are going.

These pics also put another rumour to rest, most definitely:
sometimes there are young Syno's for sale that are supposed to be baby granny's but turn out to be hybrids.
when asked why the bright white edges are absent the salesperson almost always replies "these develop later".
as you can see here a baby Granny looks exactly like an adult (although the spots are more clear); the finnage is a dead giveaway......already fully developed fincoloration at a size of 40mm SL or so.
good to bury all the hybrid crap!

Baby granulosus
Hi Richard,my baby Granny is the same size and from the same spawn,it is probably down to my estimation of their size being a slight over estimation, but when yours and mine were seen together, they are just about identical. When Chris and I first saw them they would have been 1"-1.5"was my guess.I think I should remember to use S.L.rather than T.L.in future as that makes a difference and might have caused some confusion.
Unfortunately,I will not be able to attend GLEE because of the health issues I have, but when you are on the stand look out for a young guy named Gavin. He`s responsible for the breeding and would be able to give you the lowdown on how he did it.I hope he will be there. We were in contact with the breeder earlier this week,he couldn`t/wouldn`t release anymore because of the show, but said they would have more ready in about 4 weeks.(that was last Monday). So I guess there has been another spawning.
Keep me informed how the little guy is doing and we can compare notes. After Sunday there is no reason at all why we cannot name the breeders as it will be in the public domain then, but we should give them the right to announce their achievement first.
best wishes

To clear up a few points with regards to certain postings mentioned above, and the authenticity of the fish.I would like to point out one or two things that may have been missed, but were mentioned by me in earlier postings.
a)I stated in my posting elsewhere (11-8-06)I first saw these babies at a size of approx 1.5" .They looked exactly like the adults. This would also include finnage.
b)The fish were all being kept in tanks with bare bases, i.e.no substrate.
c)The male and female were brought together after conditioning, and it should be assumed therefore they were seperated afterwards.
d)I was not in a position to photograph the young fish as
i)I didn`t have a camera with me,
ii)I don`t own one,
iii)As the journey, to and from the breeder, would have been a round trip of 200 miles it would have been impossible
to pop home and get one, even if I had one.
e)The age of these fish would be approximately 6 months when taking into account their growth rate from when we first saw them to the time we received them. They are not 3-5 Years old has as been suggested elsewhere on the forum.
f)I have refused to identify the breeder out of respect
because of their forthcoming Traders Exhibition, and their intention to use these fish as a major part of their exhibit. It would not be correct for me to pre-empt anything they have planned. My reason for stating I had seen these babies was merely as a point of interest to forum members.
Had I realised at the time that I be would badgered in the way I have I would not have mentioned it in the first place.Julian Dignall is aware of who the breeder is.
.
I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

OK, well, there we have it. A picture paints 1000 words although I reckon over 1000 words were needed as well (at least if you count the repeated ones). Good to see the fish and to bury all the controversy.
So, as I'm in the USA now and don't fancy the phone bill, anyone tell me how much these are being sold for?

Hi Richard,
Just a point on the price of the Granulosus.I think we need to be a little careful with the price as we are not certain if the price from the breeder will stay the same.It is of course dependant on supply and demand and the reaction they receive from the trade.I have no commercial interests in this at all,but would suggest anyone who is keen on purchasing to contact Chris and discuss things with him.If he can guage the level of interest, it will make it easier to know the level of orders he will need to place and help him to maintain this current price.Chris will be at GLEE talking to the breeder over the weekend, and will do his level best to maintain the price at the level he has advertised. With a little luck he may be able to buy a number from the show, but it will be about 3 weeks before further Granulosus become available if not.
I do apologise to everyone if this sounds like a sales pitch as it isn`t intended to be.Chris is my closest friend but not a business partnerand would certainly not wish to mislead people.
