Pleco question

I have a Pleco (about 3 inches)in a 29 gallon African tank. Lately the pleco seems to be "hanging out" at the water line at the top of the tank. I have not noticed any aggression towards the pleco from any of the fish. What, if any, might the reason be for him/her to stay mostly at the water line? Thanks for any input

Hi Laknarf,

It's hard to say for sure, but one obvious reason for sitting near the surface is if you have low oxygen levels in the water - water near the surface will have higher levels of oxygen than other places.

It could of course be that it just feels happiest at that place, but it's not a "normal" place for a pleco in general.

Have to agree with MatsP, it's an oxygen problem in the tank or with the fish itself having been compromised in it's ability to extract O2 from the water.

Thanks guys for your input.............The pleco is the only fish hanging out at the water line. I also have in the tank a Synodontis Eur.... and 6 African Ciclids, all of which are in their "normal" water levels. Would you think it's a problem only to the pleco and I should move him to a 'tamer' tank? or How can I get more oxygen into the tank? I have a hob filter that 'breaks' the water with the return. Any input is greatly appreciated

I suggest checking for ich. These parasites invade the gills first, so ple*os often show breathing problems before external signs of disease.

Also check for a bloated belly and fast breathing.There is a great possibility that he also has this symptoms if he stays that close to the surface and never moves to the bottom.But if he doesnt breath too fast and if he does go to the bottom sometimes then you shouldnt worry about him.A fish with breathing difficulties wont move towards the bottom even if you try to make it go.
