I think those are L173 as per pictures in Aqualog.

L173 on this site is synonymous to , which is NOT the case in Aqualog, and I beleive the latter is "more correct".

I don't think anyone disagrees with "L98 == L46 == H. zebra", so that's just a slightly different pattern of the same species of fish.

- there's quite a few pictures there...

There's 16 images of in the Cat-eLog as well...

Of course, since some of these are potentially easily confused with each other, and I know that at least L236 and L173/L174 are fish that can vary quite a bit within the species, one picture may show a fish that is quite different from another.

L-numbers are better than "common names", but they aren't the same as a proper scientific description with keys to differentiate one fish from another, so there may still be a lot of confusion with these fish.

Hi Greatshorty, welcome to the board! Could you please add your location to your profile in order to help us give you the most accurate information available for your area? We tend to be a very international forum and there are different treatments and even fish available in different areas. Thanks!

I personally don't think your fish is L173, but maybe L174, or one of the newly designated catchalls for Hypancistrus, L400

Mats,

Not to disagree, but I believe these actually look more like L174. The variants I've seen of L173 to date, I don't trust Aqualog, have been more regularly striated as opposed to the spotted pattern on the rear portion of the pictures.

Eye size seems to dictate 174, but I'm not 100% on that.

They look like young species of L174 so I agree with the others.

So 173 do have larger eyes or what? and 174 has smaller or they have different colouration as well?

Yes, L173 have bigger eyes then L174, and yes their colours differ too...L173 is a black and white species when L174 is grey and black.
