Does anyone have info on Corydoras sp. "Rio Negro I&quo

Post by ayric »

Hello!

I am new to this forum, and could not find any info on this fish here or elsewhere.

I bought six Corydoras sp. "Rio Negro I" today. They are supposedly quite newly discovered and do not have a latin name. A Corydoras encyclopedia list it as Corydoras sp. "Rio Negro I", (similar to C. multimaculatus).

Does anyone have this fish and/or information on its requirements for water values? I suppose it is pretty much the same as other corydoras, but I like to know the exact info and that is not easy to come by.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Thank you! :)

Certainly. :)

Is there a way to upload pictures or do I have to do it this way by linking to my server?

These were taken today (cell phone cam, not very good)

We see these i Denmark under the "Rio Negro"-name also... I personally think they are Corydoras kanei, even though this species is supposed to come from the Rio Branco rather than Rio Negro.

I agree, it looks like kanei. Thanks for the tip.

I don't remember the book's name, but it seemed like one of those species bibles, so I find it strange that it is officially included there under a different name if it is kanei.

Can anyone differentiate these two or are they the same?

Thanks!

kanei

Certainly looks like what I am calling kanei. Mine were sold as atropersonatus. There is a recently described C. negro, but it's more 'paleatus' in appearance than spotted.

Attached pic of my cf. kanei, from which I've raised a few youngsters.

I would say that they are C. kanei. C. negro in fact comes from the Rio negro in Bolivia not the infamous black water river that runs into the Amazon at Manaus.

Thank you Ian!

I went to the store again, and it seemed the book was a few years old. It was the All Corydoras book from Aqualog. I agree that it has to be the kanei. Is it possible that kanei was temporarily called sp. Rio Negro I? The book also had a Rio Negro II that looked very different.

So does the kanei have any particular needs as to water values and such? Are these quite normal corydoras or hard to come by? The Cat-eLog doesn't say much about it.

Thanks again!

Corydoras kanei are not all that common, but usually appear in the hobby at least once a year. They are not too fussy in regard to water condition so long as it is clean and well oxygenated.

There were quite a number of mistakes in the Aqualog All corydoras book when it was first published and these have never been rectified. This was one of the reasons I got together with Hans-Georg Evers and wrote our book "Identifying Corydoradinae Catfishes". Prior to that in 2001 I wrote a book on breeding Corys called "Breeding Corydoradine Catfishes". which contains spawning details of 65 species. Both books are available directly from me.
